Is that a cultural thing just in America? It always weirded me out that at parties and family things, coffee gets served at like 8pm or 9pm, around dessert time. But wouldn't it then keep you up at night when you try to go to bed? It doesn't make sense ._.

Its definitely not an American thing. The only Americans I know who do this are of recentish European heritage, since it happens there

People just have coffee with desserts to make it seem like not as big of a deal that theyre assuaging their sweet tooth.

The British drink tea in the afternoon, with scones (sweet bread). My family has cafecito (coffee) at 7 pm. It's not late enough in the evening that it keeps us awake. My parents usually watch a movie after cafecito

Ooh, this checks out actually! Because I mostly notice it with my Italian and French grandparents. I guess it's more of a European thing, not American. Silly.

I do this sometimes. my grandmother did it often and picked it up from that. she always said it helped with digestion, but I think she just really liked coffee. she drank a ton of it daily.

Koreans do this too. Even with COIVD "restrictions" here, it's a big thing to go to a coffee shop for desserts and coffee after a dinner.

Same, it doesn't really affect me, and I don't drink much coffee.

Yeah, my wife's Korean and her parents offer me coffee in the evenings all the time.

So weird! I don't get it... I guess if you've built up a caffeine immunity, as many people tend to do... you can drink it right before bed without issue. I agree too, the bitterness does make it go well with sweet desserts.

Now the bigger question, though, why do we eat sweet, sugar-rush food right before bed...?

Not sure, I also never understood why so many people would have to light up a cigarette after food and act like it was so great. I always thought cigarettes tasted gross (moreso than usual) after eating.
