In Japanese mythology, at the dawn of time, there was just an endless ocean. Then 2 gods stuck staves or something into the water and stirred around until the Japanese islands formed

I remember a Chinese national once telling me how sushi came to Japan. Chinese merchants would transport fish to Japan wrapped in rice to ferment and preserve it. You were supposed to remove the fish from the rice, but no one gave Japanese customers the memo, so they ate it rice and all. I never cared to check if the guy was bullshitting me or not.
