My family listened to the Gunslinger 20 years ago when we were living in New Jersey. It was fun, but I read too fast to enjoy audiobooks.

I love those books! Hard to believe they screwed up making a movie about it, but they did.

That's the majority of adaptations since they have to cut stuff out.

While there are almost always changes, not all of them are bad. And some may not change much. Depends on the adaptation, tbh

I feel like that was the last good one. After that one is when he suffered his hit-and-run injuries, and it kind of felt like he was just rushing to finish the series at that point, and the quality suffered. And the later books are where a lot of the crossover references stop being minor and cute and start becoming kind of annoying.

Plus, the Harry Potter and Doctor Doom references are kind of stupid.

Though the last book does have some awesome moments.

Are those references any more stupid than Adam Sandler or The Craft? Those were both named in Wizard and Glass

Yes.

Because those references are taking place in "the real world", and serve a narrative purpose. And are extremely minor.

The references in Wolves of the Calla are taking place on the fantasy side of his setting, and mostly feel like Stephen King just went "Hey, I really liked Harry Potter, so now I am going to reference it". The references feel much more significant, much less subtle, much less appropriate to that side of the setting, and ultimately kind of pointless.

If the reference had just been Eddie and Jake in modern-day NYC wandering past a bookstore where someone just blurts out how awesome Harry Potter is, or if they'd seen a movie poster for the Harry Potter films, it would have have been way less of an annoyance.
