All the non-animated ones were like: Dark ominous theme, kid probably named Max moves to new place and has no friends, seems to have no clue who his dad is, only time he spends with anyone is his mom shouting from another room at him. Basically paints the picture of someone on the verge of a severe mental episode then all of a sudden finds some kind of creature or thing to make his new best friend. Then through a bunch of bad shit they lose the friend and that is just the end of the movie.

All animated ones were like: Some bad thing happens, go on journey to fix it, go through major sacrifice and even some of the main cast dying / getting lose, initial problem kind of solved, end of movie. Hell I think these movies killed off more of the main characters than modern franchises. Marvel kills off one guy ever then decides to bring him back anyways.

00's kids had movies like cars where a car loses a race then wins a race. I assume that is how the movie goes I have never seen it.

This sounds like Kazaam with Shaquille O'Neal

No joke I perfectly described like 10 movies with that non-animated description.

The 90's are when the color returned thanks to Nickelodeon. It's the 80's stuff that was dark.

Those were all fantasy though. A lot of those 90s movies were mostly real life, then some kind of crazy fantasy thing happens. Young millennial kids growing up in broken homes was a real thing and was pretty dark.

Transformers

Kids got to see some of their favorite characters killed off.

Of course this was just to help sell the new characters, but kids didn't know that.
