In Japan they were a badge denoting you were a samurai, in Europe they were for knights or lords because of the cost. If you had a weapon that was hard to master and expensive to produce, you were important. Outside of that, modern media likes them because they're flashy and make tense scenes. As someone who practices HEMA (specifically rapier fencing) and owns a bunch of weapons, if I were to be thrown into a gladiator battle I'd want a spear.
