Whiskey only ages in the casks right? Like, keeping a bottle unopened for years does nothing? If a 12 year old whiskey is bottled and kept for 12 more years it does nothing right? It won't be "aged" for 24 years? Also, once opened, how long before it goes bad?

Couple years I'd say. Even after that you're probably fine for some time.

It can vary, and will happen faster the more empty the bottle is (more air inside). It is still drinkable, but you can tell in the flavor that something has been lost.
