New data collected by DKC Analytics reveals American behaviors around cookouts and grilling are shifting this summer. Data collected from a sample of 1,000 US adults between May 27, 2021 and May 28, 2021which was calibrated to accurately reflect US adult age demographics and provide an even gender splitfound that 78 percent of Americans are looking to add plant-based meats to barbecues. A majority (65 percent) are choosing plant-based meat to eat healthier, a trend that is being led by millennials.

I do like that plant-based burgers have no cholesterol. I just think the sodium needs to be kept lower, though. I prefer homemade plant-based burgers (like ones made out of beans, tofu, sweet potatoes, and that kind of stuff.)

New studies are clearly showing having high sodium isn't a problem.

Conversely, many old people die from low sodium (in combination with heat, for example). They pass out cause they needed a gatorade.

Dr. Praeger's is probably my favorite store bought plant burger. He uses whole ingredients and the macros are quite good.

I bought some beyond cook-out burgers. They look thicker than their regular ones. Cant wait to grill it later

Plant-based meat was having a moment before the pandemic, nabbing celebrity investors, record-setting IPOs, Whopper fast-food deals and high-end chefs who transformed pea protein and soy into savory, expectation-defying deliciousness.

Then the pandemic hit, restaurants closed, and many Americans were stuck at home battling anxiety and sourdough starters. Industry experts wondered whether enthusiasm for this new food category would falter and sales flag would plant-based meat turn out to be a fad rather than a movement? It fleetingly looked grim: Last April, plant-based protein shipments to restaurants fell 27 percent, according to market research firm NPD Group.

However, it appears that those worries were ill-founded. Alt-meat has emerged stronger than ever, much of it because of one thing: price.

Supply-chain problems and virus outbreaks in meat-processing plants have led to meat price increases that far outstrip those of groceries overall. Meanwhile, its getting easier and less expensive for companies to create a lot more of these plant-based proteins, bringing down the costs of the soy and pea-protein meats, dairy and eggs much faster than anticipated.

A pound of ground Beyond Meat is down to about $5.70. Beef prices, up 3.3 percent from a year ago, mean ground beef can cost between $4.10 and $6, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Impossible Foods has cut its restaurant prices twice in the past year, and in February, the companycut retail prices by 20 percent, bringing the price of two quarter-pound patties down to $5.49.

We plan to keep lowering prices as we achieve new production records and economies of scale and ultimately undercut the price of ground beef from cows, said Impossible Foods President Dennis Woodside in an email.

Even plant-based egg prices are coming down. Matt Riley, senior vice president of global partnerships at Eat Just, said the company took its mung-bean-based Just Egg from $7.99 to $5.99 in March 2020 and then down to $3.99 in January of this year about the price of many pasture-raised eggs at the farmers market.

These price reductions, against a backdrop of surging grocery prices overall, have pushed the skeptics and the curious over the edge: Theyre trying it. Beyond Meats grocery store revenue was up 108 percent in 2020, with more people reportedly becoming repeat customers. And while Impossible Foods, a private company, doesnt release sales numbers, in 2020 it expanded retail sales from fewer than 150 grocery stores to 17,000 stores, as well as via direct-to-consumer sales.

And the playing field got more crowded.In a year when groceries were just about the only thing consumers were buying, an eye-popping 112 new plant-based meat, egg and dairy brands hit grocery aisles in 2020, reflecting some $3.1 billion worth of new investments in alternative proteins, according to the Good Food Institute, a nonprofit organization that promotes alternatives to traditional meat, dairy and eggs.

Also, even asmany restaurants were reduced to takeout, delivery and limited indoor dining, plant-based proteins on restaurant menus jumped by 118 percent in 2020, according to Datassential, a food market research company.

The fact that prices dropped helped. Plant-based meat is more popular than ever.

I dont like any current plant based meat products. Hopefully, they keep growing in popularity so that someone can invent one. Like I'd rather not kill a cow if I don't have to if everything else is the same to me.

Well, it totally depends on how they take surveys. It can be a biased group they took the survey from. Like if they say hey were taking a survey on plant based foods and people that are more passionate about it are willing to spend time on the survey. I personally never take surveys because I value my time.

Our analysis is that in three to four years plant-based will be perhaps 10% of the market. Were a large beef producer and that is a big part of our portfolio. So theres some cannibalization that will occur, MacLennan said at a National Grain and Feed Association convention.

If I have a BBQ for Independence Day, and buy a 4 pack of veggie burgers to cover the 2 people that eat them, but otherwise buy 50 burgers to cover the rest of my guests, I'm part of the 75% that's grilling plant-based meat.

And then I have another BBQ for Labor Day, and buy another 4 veggie burger and 50 regular burgers.

That's 100 burgers, 8 veggie burgers.

Approximately 10% of my purchase.

The article didn't say they were "only" grilling plant-based meats, jut that it was part of the BBQ.

The issue is the methodology of selecting those 1000 people. Who did they poll? Did they poll people in just LA? Did they poll random people from across the country? That is what matters.

because of those types of questions i do not trust polling or surveys and they should be disregarded by everyone tbh

I mean, if your sample is sufficiently diverse, your results can be quite valid. Or if your conclusion is sufficiently narrow, the same thing applies. So to say you just dismiss them outright without even checking their methodology is a very ignorant take and is anti-science.

If you poll a random sample of 1000 Americans, then you can say that your data reasonably approximates all Americans. If however all your people are from Atlanta, then you can only draw conclusions about people from Atlanta.

how do you guarantee a sufficiently distributed sample? How do you know people are responding honestly rather than based on whatever they think you want to hear? How do you obtain 1,000 random people and what is the probability they arent going to be from a bucket that is informed enough to tell you whatever it is the Overton window demands people should tell you, esp on hot-topic subjects?

too flakey for me to trust until we have the capabilities to mass-poll millions of people from across the country and get live anonymized data about what people actually think

id rather look at what consumers are actually purchasing and doing rather than relying on polling or surveys. Are you personally going to invest big in plant-based meat as a result of this survey? Are you going to short the companies that are producing traditional meat products? Etc. I simply do not have the confidence in this stuff until theres way more data and anonymized voting on these things as well, to base any actual decision-making on it lol
