Some people just have "it" or whatever you want to call it.

I feel kind of defeated. I always want to be the best at stuff but man, there are some serious levels to this.

I know the obvious answer is education, but i have talked to professionals in various industries and it comes down to more than that, especially when you are outside of the classroom setting it is sink or swim ya know.

It makes me feel so small.

Very few people are actually talented to any degree that matters. Hard work and practice are more important factors in most cases.

Well firstly, instead of feeling small and defeated, they feel like they have room for growth. Even a talent requires development, there's always going to be other talented people trying to take your place. And if you don't have talent, good news, you don't need it. You just need to convince enough fools that you are great. Though I suppose manipulation and deception can also be talents.

There's only one thing that's gonna set you apart and let you succeed in life. It's the magic ticket they call talent, and if you don't have it, you're left to rot in despair. Game over.

I really should have become talented before message boards. That was my biggest mistake.

Jamie Foxx has a quote where he says something to the effect that god will give you all the talent in the world but balance it out by giving you a foot fetish or something.

Your boy can relate.

Dedication well get you to a certain point, but there are some innate things you just can't replicate, either for how quickly you pick something up, or how far you can go with that something.

A girl in my 5th grade class made a perfect replica of a poorly-printed copy of a painting of sunflowers behind a wooden fence. Hell, it looked better than what the printer put out, and she had never drawn before.

I gave up any ideas about drawing then and there.

Perhaps you should be a writer because that was a concise thought with a beginning, middle and end. A short narrative with internal conflict and a message. I'd like to hear more of the thought process of this narrator.

Genetics. It can hurt to hear but its liberating once you understand everyone hits an intrinsic genetic ceiling in nearly every aspect of their life. Try to find a niche and do your best.

Every? I don't think most people can reach their maximum potential in everything they do, and so much of what we do isn't even important.

there is no "it" -- or at least, it's not something inherent to the person.

it's all environmental factors. coming from a supportive family with money is the big one

I think he means the potential exists and is different for everyone, not that most people hit even one of those plateaus.

I meant everyone has a ceiling, not that everyone will attempt to reach it. No matter how much time or money I have I will never sing like Mercury, dunk like Jordan, have the creative spark of Da Vinci or the genius of Hawking. Everyone has limits and the sooner people accept that the happier with themselves they will be.

all the people you named are (or were) members of a community. they basically became well-known due to chance, not because of anything they were in control of.

for every person like that that becomes famous, there are many, many equally skilled people who don't
