Then you ain't a Master Chef, bitch. Ridiculous that she made it to the top ten, especially after serving two out of three judges a raw chicken breast

I haven't watched the show, but there's someone on there who calls themselves a vegan but prepares non-vegan food? Veganism is about avoiding animal exploitation. I don't think you should call yourself a vegan if you're bending your rules to win a cooking competition.

A plant-based dieter. Veganism is about trying to remove animal products from all aspects of your life as feasibly as possible because you're doing it for the animals.

Not at anywhere near the current rate we eat it. Giant farms aren't cruel to the animals just for the fun of it. They do it because it's cheaper.

Protecting those industries from what though? The corrupt lawmakers help these industries keep their secrets because they know that the truth being widely known about how these places operate would turn people off to it.

You are painting all vegans with a pretty wide brush. There are people who are vegan for perceived health benefits. There are people who ate vegans for environmental reasons. There are people who are vegans because of the treatment of animals. There are people who are vegans because eating animal products just weird them out. They share a diet in common not necessarily the underlying reasoning behind it.

In some sense, I guess.

The idea that knowing what "goes on" in slaughterhouses (as if people already don't) would turn the world significantly vegan/vegetarians is a laughable ideological idea that some supposed intelligent humans have. But for sure there is an incentive to keep bloody and gory images out of the public due to the gut reaction such would cause probably having a minor, almost insignificant, negative result on revenue for said industry. It doesn't mean there's some sort of conspiracy to keep the evils of meat eating secret. They're not. Linked to that, there's also an incentive to protect the individual factories within the state from a bad image that linking such gory images to them might give.

Those are all distinctive groups though. Someone on a plant-based diet might still buy leather goods or prepare meat for other people. A vegan might eat lab-grown meat while a plant-based dieter wouldn't if they are doing it for health reasons. A vegan might be more likely to eat a lot of junk food while a plant-based dieter who is doing it for health reasons likely wouldn't.
DeadBankerDream posted...

I didn't make it up. Donald Watson, the guy who coined the term vegan, co-founded the Vegan Society for animals rights. I'm not saying that vegans are better than plant-based dieters, just that they are distinct enough that they shouldn't be classified as the same thing just because their diets are similar.

In some sense, I guess.

The idea that knowing what "goes on" in slaughterhouses (as if people already don't) would turn the world significantly vegan/vegetarians is a laughable ideological idea that some supposed intelligent humans have. It probably wouldn't cause everyone to go vegan en-masse, but it would make factory farms have some accountability. It wouldn't be as easy for them to get away with their horrendous practices. Farm animals would actually get some level of welfare.

And believe it or not, a lot of people really aren't aware of how fucked up the industry is. My mom didn't even know that dairy cows need to be constantly impregnated to produce milk.

It's not about me. It's about the animals. If people have fewer reasons to eat meat from a dead animal then hopefully that will mean fewer animals needlessly dying. That's something everyone who isn't a psychopath should be in favor of.

It's really tough breaking a way of thinking that your family and society has pushed on you since birth. It's also tough because if animal exploitation is immoral then that naturally means that you and nearly everyone you know is as well. It was a struggle for me for years. Hell, there are still things I do that I question the ethics of, like my gadget hobby that I need to work on doing less of. I don't think I'm a better person than anyone just because I'm vegan. There are meat eaters out there who are a better net positive for the world than me.

Veganism has a lot of gatekeeping. Basically if you aren't very specifically doing it for the animals (and being really annoying about it) you aren't a real vegan, you just have a plant-based diet. As in, veganism is considered to be a lifestyle and not a diet. Plant-based is the diet (though a plant-based diet doesn't mean you don't eat meat or other animal products, just mostly plant products)

Eeehhhhh, I take issue with that, its a huge asterisk. Thats like saying you're a master mechanic but refuse to work on imports. Vegans have no place in the Master Chef competition, they cannot taste their food which is basically one of the ten commandments of cooking. How are they gonna serve someone something when they have no idea how it tastes?

I've never seen a cook torture an animal. Turn down the drama, its pretty much 90% of why vegans aren't taken seriously. If you have to lie and embellish to make your case, you don't have one.

And if you think all livestock live in Tyson Foods conditions, you have no business commenting. I've spent the last 20 years of my life in farming communities. The animals have plenty of room to roam and are not mistreated. It makes zero sense to damage and abuse your product, and in 20 years I know of only ONE farmer in my community who had less than stellar conditions, and was reported and corrected the issues. Smaller communities actually care about their food and the conditions they live in.

Why is it that whenever animal welfare is brought up, everyone suddenly lives in Avalon with giant free-ranging pastures of animals who are loved as family and die of old age before being eaten? Let's just conveniently forget how most livestock on the planet live.

Vegan drama

No. You don't forget it, you try and elicit change for better conditions. Meat eating will never, ever go away. Its a fools errand to try and make that happen. The best you can do is fight for humane conditions for feed animals.

Like, you people do realize cows and pigs only purpose is to feed other animals, right? If we didn't eat them, something else will, and the pigs especially would cause untold ironic damage to vegans food source. Pigs are destructive nuisance animals.
