Police are investigating a fire at a Roman Catholic church in an Indigenous community east of Calgary.
RCMP say officers were called to the Siksika First Nation Catholic Church shortly after midnight.
They say no one was in the church and the Siksika fire department was able to put out the flames before there was any major damage.
Police in British Columbia are investigating four recent fires that destroyed Catholic churches in that provinces southern Interior, and Catholic churches in Saskatoon and Edmonton were vandalized with red paint in the past week.
Hundreds of unmarked graves have bee recently discovered at two former residential schools one in B.C. and the other in Saskatchewan that were operated by a Catholic religious order.
RCMP say a preliminary investigation indicates the fire at the Siksika First Nation was deliberately set.
Theyre asking anyone with information to come forward.

This is probably in response to the mass graves of indigenous children they've been finding in residential schools across the nation. They've unearthed close to one thousand dead children in these schools.

When I first heard about the church burnings I was like "wow that's fucked up". But considering the context, I honestly don't blame people for retaliating like this. Indigenous children were taken from their people, placed in these schools where they were mistreated and forcibly assimilated into the Christian benchmark of white Canada, and we're now discovering that hundreds of children - at least - died at these schools.

A thousand children, separated from their home and their culture, mistreated and left to die before being buried in mass graves and being covered up as if they never existed. Almost certainly more than that. I'd be fucking furious too.

So yeah, fuck the Catholic church and let the churches burn. The atrocities committed against the indigenous people of Canada are undeniably, objectively worse.

You are talking about burning down a communities place of worship because of something that happened generations ago and that many other religions and the government of Canada actively participated in.

Should they burn down city hall too?

The pope has apologized for this.

This entire policy of removing the kids and sending them to boarding schools run by churches in most cases (not just catholic) was a policy of the Canadian government.

I'm talking about a community retaliating against an institution that buried undocumented native children in mass graves for decades, because the neglect or outright abuse levelled at those children by that institution led to their deaths. Not to mention the thousands of people who survived, but who now live with intense trauma stemming from their treatment in those facilities.

Get the fuck outta here with that "community's place of worship" horseshit. Faithful Catholics will find a way to worship without an ornate building with a bunch of fancy trinkets. Faith comes from within. But the wounds inflicted on the indigenous population of Canada will never heal, both in regards to the people who experienced those conditions and survived, and to the people who died there.

You can build a new church. Catholicism is in no real risk, their teachings and the faith of their flocks are unharmed. You can't get those children back, you can't fix the people who survived the attempt to forcibly assimilate them through abuse and squalid living conditions, and you can't heal the damage done to indigenous culture through the meddling of the Catholic church.

What about members of the native community that are catholic and had their church burned down?

And I'll reiterate that this was the policy of the government of Canada but instead of pointing the finger at Canada and the church many of you are pointing it exclusively at the Church.

And honestly, yeah. The Canadian government deserves just as much flack for this. This was government policy.

The Catholic church and the Canadian government deserve to face the full backlash of the nation's people for mandating this. Not for "letting" this happen - for being directly responsible for these atrocities being committed.

They'll find a way to practice their faith, because Catholicism is never in short supply. What Catholicism and government mandate destroyed in regards to Canada's indigenous population will always cut deeper than a couple of burned churches, and I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that most indigenous people would probably agree.

Or maybe, just maybe, folks are pissed off at the church for pulling this kind of shit and finding over 1000 dead kids in unmarked graves is what finally got them to do something about it.

By reading your posts, you come across as someone who's more mad about the destruction of property than more than 1000 dead children DUMPED IN UNMARKED GRAVES.

"Beat the Native out of them, so the only thing remaining is their blood." This was the edict of the Catholic Church. Forgive me if I don't cry for these places of worship that get burned down because the Catholic Church is only interested in subjugation and domination of indigenous peoples.
