I love both and want both, but SMRPG is way more likely to be done better and in similar style. Still one of the best RPGs of all time for gameplay alone.

Technically they both got sequels already (actually it looks like none of the Mario RPG series were actually true sequels). This thing was Musashiden 2 in Japan:
