Is the pandemic already basically over?

Everybody is already vaccinated, or at least the ones who care to get it. Nobody is wearing masks anymore, or at least the ones who cared about the mandate to begin with.

It feels kind of like a thing of the past as people have largely moved on by now. Is that the case in your area? People are already congregating in public like there's no pandemic going on, which basically means it's over.

I'm sure the Delta variant would love people to consider the pandemic to be "over". I mean, not like it's managing to infect even places that until now have done a great job of keeping it out or anything.

Depends on how bad the Delta variant actually ends up being. If the current vaccines work against it then were probably good, unless another variant shows up.

Im going back to wearing a mask everywhere until we know more about it though.

They work well enough to make a difference; but not as well as they do against earlier variants. The Beta variant is worse as far as vaccine evasion goes - though the so-called "Delta Plus" has one of the key mutations Beta has that's thought to be responsible for this.

It's also likely that over time, vaccine evasion will get stronger - of course, newer vaccines can be developed to keep up, and it's not likely that there'll suddenly be a variant which just ignores the vaccine altogether (rather than variants slowly emerging that the older vaccine is less and less effective against, while still offering "better than nothing").

Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if that's part of why the Chinese vaccines are less effective - they're no doubt based off the original Wuhan strain, whereas the international ones are based off newer strains, even if only very slightly newer.

A lot of people act like it's over, but it isn't.

I work in a medical ICU (MICU). The Medical ICU was converted into two separate units to handle Covid-19 at the University of Virginia. This location was hit harder than most by COVID.

Before, we had over 30 COVID patients on the unit a day. Now we have only 3 in the hospital. The extra MICU unit is now being closed. No staff are worried about catching covid.

The only people still wearing masks are paranoids, and unvaccinated individuals. COVID is essentially over in the US in terms of being a crisis. People still catch it, and I imagine people will have to get vaccines for 8-10 years until every strain is completely eradicated.

That said, COVID is devastating 3rd world countries. So more strains will appear and the disease is definitely not done killing for awhile, yet.

its as over as the dumbasses of the world will let it get. with such huge portions of the population either not having access to a vaccine or stupidly refusing one freely given, its never going to go away.

its going to be real interesting watching some of the trump supporter heavy states come fall/winter. with the low vaccination rate in adults and kids that cant even be vaccinated yet i bet we'll see huge numbers...

Not only 3rd-world countries. First-world countries that have done a bad job with the vaccine rollout are getting hit quite bad right now too - Taiwan, Australia, and I'm guessing NZ probably won't be far behind...

I haven't seen a single person say the pandemic is over. A lot of people like to virtue signal by posting things like this, I will say.

I know people like to think of others being dumber than them to make themselves feel smarter.

Its not over yet, but please get your vaccine if you haven't to help prove me wrong. A mild case of covid left me with a damaged heart and ED, so get a vaccine for your own sake and everyone else around you.

If it doesn't kill you, destroy your finances with hospital bills, or infect your family, it can still permanently cripple you. Do not fuck with covid.

i call bullshit, because i know for a fact that a good number of people to this very day refuse to believe covid is even a thing while they are dying in the hospital...
