At least in the MCU Tony made the Arc reactor to power the Iron Man suit, not to keep shrapnel out of his heart. The shrapnel was being kept out just fine with a car battery, though it was a little inconvenient. It's why IM2 didn't make a ton of sense, they established that he could build a reactor external to him to power a suit (Rhodey didn't have a reactor in his chest) and a much smaller and weaker power source could power the magnet in his heart. Why not just take out the poisonous arc reactor and put it in the suit, then use more conventional power to keep his heart from dying? --- pastaman44 - I can't think of anything to say.
