When transferring a Pokemon in R/B/Y to a Gold/Silver/Crystal cart, was it possible for it to appear as shiny, even if that feature wasn't around/visible during gen 1?

Kinda curious, always wanted to ask this question 20 years ago.

It is possible, because the shininess of a pokemon is decided by it's DV values (pre gen 3 IVs); no new metadata saved to the pokemon was added in gen 2

you could still transfer a shiny Pokemon from Gen 1 to Gen 2 but you wouldnt know if it was shiny until it actually got into your Gen 2 game. There was no in-game symbol or such to indicate it was a shiny

Yes, it was based on IVs at the time IIRC, so you can even determine if the Pokemon will be shiny before you transfer it.

No random encounter could be shiny, but gift Pokmon (starters, Eevee, etc.) and set encounters (Moltres, Mewtwo, etc.) could.

Huh, so if you had a pokemon from gen 1, like say a pidgey you caught or even your own starter, it could be a shiny, and you wouldn't know it unless you happened to trade it to g/s/c?

So the concept of shiny retroactively existed even though g/s/c wouldn't come out until a few years later...

The old trick to get a Shiny Ditto in Gen 2 uses this idea. And it's very useful because Gen 2 is also the only generation where a shiny parents significantly increases the odds of a shiny egg.

Not really. It's more that Shininess at the time was based on a pre-existing mechanic (DVs) - Gen 1 had DVs too, since they determine stat growth. They just didn't change how DVs work in Gen 2.

In Gen 3 they had the current IV system, and Shinies were pure RNG and not DV-based.

Yep. It's similar to how gender doesn't exist in Gen 1, but when trading to Gen 2 it'll consistently decide the gender based on the pokemon's Attack DV stat (where males are literally better than females btw)

Wait I didn't know that. So if you had a shiny swinub the egg you got could contain a shiny pokemon?

It's a little more complicated than that. Basically, DVs are inherited in a certain way in Generation II, and having certain DVs can give you a Shiny Pokemon.

To get a Shiny, you need

  • Attack DV: 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14, or 15
  • Defense DV: 10
  • Speed DV: 10
  • Special DV: 10
When two Pokemon breed, it inherits its DVs from the opposite-gender parent, or from Ditto if Ditto is being used. Attack & Speed DVs will be random. The Defense DV will be carried over exactly, and the Special DV will be carried over or given a +/- 8 boost depending on its value.

So: with a Shiny Ditto,

  • Attack has a 50% chance to be correct by randomness
  • Defense will always be correct
  • Special has a 50% chance to be correct due to its mechanics
  • Speed has a 1/32 chance of being correct
which would give a 1/128 likelihood overall.

Though I think I'm wrong somewhere or not accounting for something, as the best rate I often hear cited is 1/64.

How come whenever I breed a pokemon with a ditto, the egg was always a ditto, never the other pokemon. I remember trading the starters from rby to gsc and they were always male, never female, so I used a ditto and yet I never got a starter in the egg. It was ditto every. single. time.

You could breed Ditto with other Ditto.
But breeding Ditto with anything else would never give a Ditto.

Also remember in Pokemon Stadium when the pokemon would appear in funky alternate colors, but they were still not considered shiny? Good times.

Wow so many hidden mechanics. If I had only given a nickname to a pokemon I would have gotten a charizard with alternate colors too?

Depends on the nickname and it would only be in the stadium games.
