Clearly I'm not enough of an elite gamer because with my setup it's basically a cable that does what my HDMI cable does except without music, meaning I need ANOTHER cable just for that

the nerds in the office told me it was better so I got memed into getting it. But they also memed me into a corsair RGB keyboard so really maybe the problem here is that I should stop being sold on nerd stuff by nerds

From what I understand, DP allows you to daisy chain

I didn't know it didn't support audio though

DisplayPort is generally a little better, but you won't notice the difference unless you're running a really high-end display. One disadvantage I have noticed is that DisplayPort cords are a lot shorter, which can be really inconvenient depending on your setup.

HDMI ports are pretty damn big, even the "mini" ones.

Uh what? DP does support audio. It's also a higher bandwidth than HDMI, so it supports higher resolutions and framerates.

I just know it's a pain at work because it's just another standard and we get monitors and computers in that have different video ports and now I need over 9000 combinations of DVI, DP, and HDMI converter cables

it would excite me, unless it requires a specific version of the port

Audio needs to be supported at both ends, and monitors tend to not for some reason.

That would be my issue then. That's so fucking weird.

I mean, hardly anyone uses tv speakers either. You can get cheap logitech speakers for like $50 or get a soundbar for pretty much whatever your budget is.

DisplayPort is basically an open version of HDMI. HDMI is more widespread, so a lot of devices only have it. However, for more PC-specific setups (eg. chaining, or even simply having, multiple monitors), you'll generally see DisplayPort being preferred. Also why a lot of GPUs these days tend to give like, one HDMI port then a whole bunch of DisplayPorts - people who need multiple outputs are also probably going to be using DisplayPort.

It's not my tv speakers thats the issue, it's that i want all my different devices to route through a single audio source.

Get a tv or some kind of switch you'd plug in before the monitor

An av receiver should work as well but is probably expensive for your needs and is more common when you step up into home theater setups where you're dropping a few grand on all your equipment

Thats kind of equally annoying compared to just using an hdmi cable though
