1000 hours of practice is a good rule of thumb.

In the cartoon Dr. Katz, he said it took years to learn a flourish

Sorry, I guess for chords and stuff it depends on how clean you want your transitions to be and stuff. I guess some chord progression are harder than others.

An hour a day for three years... sounds about right. I learned drums pretty fast, but I basically had a gun pointed at the back of my head. It wasnt until I could practice (without people racing in the room thinking I was trying to initiate a jam session) that I started to get better.

Okay, but can you at least vouch for the Mongolian Chop Squad method?

I can neither confirm nor deny its effectiveness; as I have only just now heard of it

Just pick it up and play, it's the easiest instrument and one of the most gratifying to learn

Go on Youtube and learn the songs you wanna play, follow the guides. Your fingers need to build the physical strength (eventually you'll form the light touch needed to play) and dexterity over time but it'll never happen if you don't start xD

If you learn this you'll be on your way to being self sufficient in learning advanced guitar stuffs later:

standard guitar tuning
open guitar chords
TABS
Chord charts for guitar
fret positions (this ones easy, fret 1, fret 2)
names of the strings

basically how to tune the thing and play open chords should be the first thing you learn - buy a capo too

it'll probably take a week to get started tbh then it's all up to you how fast you wanna learn

I've been playing piano for 15 years and I'm still fairly mediocre.

Learn a few open/natural chords.

You can just hold down the chord & strum or arpeggiate ~ exactly like Violin. Guitar & Bass are fundamentally the exact same thing too, except bass works more with plucking & slapping. You have everything you need to get started. Its not learning Piano, which requires two hands working in syncopation on different arrangements to notes, and is almost completely counterintuitive to the techniques for violin & guitar, unless maybe you tap - with both hands.

Piano is the ultimate.
