I say accidentally because I thought I had like 3 episodes left lol. It was actually pretty cool to have it end wtihout me expecting it. I knew the show had an ambiguous/controversial ending, so I think knowing it was ending would potentially taint my virgin viewing.

Ultimately the show was a slice of life show, partly about mobster life, but mostly about Tony. He talks several times throughout the show about how how their life is likely to end in a certain way: in jail or with a bullet in his chest. He escaped both before, and he confronts another final way it could end by visiting Junior in the finale (senility in old age, ripping everything you had from you the way the other options couldn't). So you have all these different ways his story could end, but the show was too lifelike to package everything together in a neat little ending.

Artistically the show had a great way of handling tension. There were moments where you knew the show was building to something like right before Chris's death how he kept looking at the radio and away from the road. As a viewer, you knew they had to be building to something. Then there was the opposite in the Christmas scene at the end of "Kaisha" (s6e12). It definitely felt like you as a viewer were waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it didn't. It was just a peaceful Christmas gathering. Finally there were moments that completely bucked the idea of tension at all like when Tony killed his cousin Tony B. Tony B was just walking inside and BLAMO. Done without notice.

All of these different timbres of storytelling really gave the show an authentic feel, like we were really watching people's lives unravel before us. So you have the end scene with the pleasantness of a family gathering and the tension of the stranger in the restaurant along with Meadow having difficulty parking. Finally the show takes away that tension and says "No, you don't get to find out if the other shoe drops or not. You just got to see a guy's life for the last 7(?) years, but the ride ends here. No more shoes for you." And I think that completely matches the storytelling of the show.

Excellent stuff. Really incredible.

It's one of if not the greatest show ever.

While all what you said is true, I still say Tony's dead. Shot by the members only jacket guy. "You probably don't even hear it when it happens right?"

Oh Tony is definitely dead. New York had had so much trouble with him. Might as well get him and Phil out of the pictures from let Butchie work with whoevers left.

Bump. I'm thinking about Dr. Melfi's role more and how much she actually helped hone Tony as a criminal/sociopath and how much of that was just bullying from her colleagues.

I'm largely thinking it was legitimate.
