Delta, first identified in India, has the potential to be more lethal because its more efficient in the way it transmits between humans and it will eventually find those vulnerable individuals who will become severely ill, have to be hospitalized and potentially die, Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHOs health emergencies program, said during a news conference. Ryan said world leaders and public health officials can help defend the most vulnerable through the donation and distribution of Covid vaccines. We can protect those vulnerable people, those front-line workers, Ryan said, and the fact that we havent, as Director-General [Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus] has said, again and again, is a catastrophic moral failure at a global level.

No variant has really found the combination of high transmissibility and lethality, but delta is the most able and fastest and fittest of those viruses, WHO officials said Monday. This particular delta variant is faster, it is fitter, it will pick off the more vulnerable more efficiently than previous variants, and therefore if there are people left without vaccination, they remain even at further risk, Ryan said. Van Kerkhove said, unfortunately we dont yet have the vaccines in the right places to protect peoples lives. The WHO has been urging wealthy nations, including the U.S. to donate doses. The Biden administration earlier Monday detailed where it will send 55 million vaccine doses, the majority of which will be distributed through COVAX, the WHO-backed immunization program.

There are other places and if they have unvaccinated people lets say from months of certain countries hoarding the vaccines could spark a mutation just like the outbreak in India caused Delta. Doesnt have to just be from unvaccinated states in US.

The drive to vaccinate all adults over the age of 18 in the UK could lead to the concentration of Covid-19 cases in schoolchildren, a leading British virologist has warned.
Under-18s would then become reservoirs in which new variants of the virus could arise, said Julian Tang, of Leicester University.
Tang was speaking as Public Health England revealed a 79% rise in one week in cases of the Delta variant of Covid, first identified in India. A race is now on between the vaccination programme and the emergence of a third wave of the virus, say scientists.
Many believe there are grounds for cautious optimism that the vaccine will hold back hospitalisations and deaths in the wake of rising case numbers triggered by last months partial release of lockdown measures, as well as the arrival of the Delta variant.
However, Tang sounded a note of caution. Most recent data indicates that the main focus of infections was now in the under-30s who have not yet been extensively vaccinated, he said. The predominance of the Delta variant over the previous Alpha variant now confirms an increased transmissibility over this earlier variant - and a much higher transmissibility over the original virus, he added.
As the Covid-19 vaccination programme progressed into younger and younger age groups, this process would drive the virus into the under-18s, who are not yet scheduled to be vaccinated. As a result, the virus will concentrate in school-age populations, which will eventually become a reservoir and driver of any ensuing Delta variant epidemic, as well as being a hotspot in which new mutations may arise, Tang said.

Yeah. People haven't been looking at the data breakdown in the US. I keep hearing it being framed as a Blue/Red state split. There are massive amounts of people in the 30 and under range not vaccinated as well as blacks and latinos of all ages. And that isn't even counting the poor countries that are just now getting vaccines donated to them.

I mean, he wanted to win the nobel prize so bad he became an Epstein lover and yet he probably could have actually won it by getting his pharma bros to give poor countries the formula to make low cost vaccine and such. And that was a mistake. I believe the number of vaccinated people is under 50% and hardly anyone wears masks in public now.

I was waiting to get my second shot in Rite Aid and an entire family was also waiting, none with masks on. And they were all overweight. No fucks given.

I've heard that too, and I've never understood it. Like, God made a vaccine, ****ing take it.

Though if it'll help anyone feel better, IIRC the vaccine is also supposed to deal with this delta COVID strain, so vaccinating will help a ton (though anyone who might because of this message is probably already doing so)
