Well the bulk of issues relevant to law enforcement are done (generally, schools differ on this allocation) two 3 to 4 hour classes (major issues being Fourth and Fifth Amendment areas) taken during either 1L or 2L year.

Four years is hardly necessary for that.

Just increasing barrier to entry is almost guaranteed to increase the quality of the pool.

There is also the fact that the jurisprudence governing the areas of legal education relevant to law enforcement are heavily, heavily fact dependent. You have broad and generalized propositions that are couched in questions of reasonableness in the light of the totality of the circumstances. Many of these issues can only be resolved after the fact via the court process because often times there is not room for a lengthy dive into case law for factually-adjacent cases beforehand.

Needless to say, my apparent colleague isn't thinking much through.

If cops need a 4 year degree then cities will have to greatly increase police salaries and raise taxes to pay for it.
