Its an auxiliary function of the beam cannon that uses the ball to manifest an explosive.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

I get that. I probably would have said the same thing. As a massive Metroid fan though, I gotta say. If there was one game I could do without, its not that one. Even from like a developer standpoint, its important to understand how they got from A to Z. Metroid could have become anything else & it wouldnt have been as good.

Im playing on PC. I cant imagine doing this on a handheld.... or an NES controller for that matter XD

I just accept it as an ability in the game and dont over think it. Like Link and how he stores 40 bombs the size if his head, 60 arrows, and multiple other items on his person; just dont over think it.

Samus is a Human that was injected giant bird alien DNA and given a power suit that let's her contort her body better than any Cirque performer; just accept it happens and move on.

Played it. Conquered it. Thats what you said as a kid in the 80s. You didnt finish a game. You conquered it.

I actually think Metroid has aged pretty well. Why? Because most of you guys are emulating this game on your two monitor setup. No in game map? Bro, just open the Nintendo Power map on your second monitor. Hate farming energy? Dude, who are you kidding? We know youre using save states.

The game has flaws but those flaws only really exist if youre playing on vintage hardware, which 99% of you aint.

Metroid as a series is one of the best underdog stories in gaming. The improvements from Metroid to Super are astounding, and despite consistently selling like shit, it still struggles and sticks around somehow.

Farming energy without the Screw Attack is a pain. You should only be farming Energy if you happen to die in a bad place. Other than that, the trick is actually to let Samus die after beating a boss..... then go pick up an E-Tank & kill the next boss. Checkpoints

Yes. The grindiness and lack of a map in an environment that is too similar looking makes Metroid very tedious.

Your opinion has been noted. Metroid was designed as an answer to how simple & flowery Super Mario Brothers was, no? Kraid is basically the hammer bros & Ridley is basically bowser. Have you ever fought Mother Brain? Its insane. The escape at the end is fun too. I think thats where they got Nightmares face from but whatever.

I've played some of it, and I feel it hasn't aged the best of the early NES games, but it's not unplayable. I can definitely see where the series, and other games of its genre branch off, and take the idea laid out in this game further, but to me it's fun for what it is.

That being said you do have to grab a few power ups for it to become enjoyable (the ball perhaps with the bombs, blaster range increase, and maybe missiles or freeze beam), and until then it kind of sucks to go through. It also isn't self-explanatory at all, and is really from a time where you were expected to figure things out through the investment of time sunk into trial and error, or what to do was just outright kind of vague.

I just started Metroid II (GB) :)

you start with the Power Ball, Longshot, & 30 Missiles. Everything is black & white. Adventure music is playing. The biggest change is being able to shoot downward, which is the first puzzle of the game to enter the Metroid lair proper. No grind this time. Everything is much more streamlined. Cant wait for the Jumpball boss. Thats my favorite.

oh yeah, and you can crouch and shoot

Does anyone have any tips for this game???? Its the one I know the least about

Spiderball everywhere you can. There's a lot of reused structures, so someplace a missile is hiding is likely to be quite a few places a missile is hiding.

Also the map isn't "flat", so you'll intuitively end up in places you didn't expect to be at the distance traveled. Some rooms are closer together than they should be, some farther, and others somehow stacked together.
