Let's say, hypothetically, that he was the deuteragonist. Ryu 1, Guile 2, Chun-Li 3.

Would this be tone deaf? Guile was always one of my favorites - in part because he had the best ending in Street Fighter II. Remember me? Remember me and Charlie? If Akuma is the main bad guy opposite Ryu, I figure Guile could get the fight with Bison and reenact that ending in the penultimate fight of the movie.

But American soldiers aren't necessarily perceived the same in 2021 as they were in 1991. Some still support our troops and hold them as heroes. Others view them in a more negative light. It's become a subject of controversy than nobody wants to directly address. (Should my views matter to this topic, they still sway in favor of positive. Though I know they're not invariably saints.) The last Hollywood movie to depict an American soldier in a positive light was Godzilla '14. And Aaron Taylor-Johnson played a man who defused bombs -- not someone who blew people up or shot them.

I feel like people would want Ryu to main, the studio would want Chun-Li to be featured prominently, and the fans would want Ken to be the cocky wise-ass in every scene; essentially the Han Solo or Iron Man of the movie. Even if you took politics out of the equation, I think the cockiness of Ken might speak more to youth than the American tough guy archetype.

They didn't want to use Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat reboot because they didn't want a white guy hero. Guile could meet the same fate in a theoretical Street Fighter reboot movie.
