First episode, I was like damn this premise is cool. Near the end I started getting bored. Then like most anime, its monster of the week singular episodic storytelling. Then the narrative is just dumped in the last episode

meh

So many shows are sadly like that, and not just anime. Its like they blow all their cool ideas in the 1st episode and then either do like you described or just sort of repeat the concept over and over but more drawn out.

I liked Death Billiards and the two-parter about the serial killer(?) and the young man who wanted revenge for his sister's(?) murder. Basically the standalone episodes in general, but those ones in particular. I don't even remember what the actual plot was.

The type of show you described usually happens in shonen. And shonen is just the term used to describe anime aimed at young/teen boys. Think the fighting anime like DBZ, Naruto, My Hero Academia etc.

I watched Death Parade recently and absolutely loved it. Almost all of the death games sans Twister were fantastic. The minor characters were really interesting, and I loved unraveling their plotlines over the episodes.

The main story was a bit weaker, but I was still invested in Chiyuki and finding out her deal.

I loved it, personally.

I felt like it was a bit slow in the middle with two eh main plot episodes + Twister in a row, but otherwise, I loved it.

Most of the death games were really good in some way or another, and they almost all had really strong emotional payoff.
