Because lots of acclaimed old timey actors were obviously shit. Like Jimmy Stewart, wtf are you doing brah? Did good acting not start until like the 70s?

Orson Welles is good in Citizen Kane, though maybe that's just because his style suits the character.

Bad acting plus the old style trans-atlantic accent. It's a thing of beauty really.

Max Shreck in Nosferatugenuinely the creepiest depiction of Dracula I have ever seen. The dude looked like a living corpse.

It really depends on what you consider "good." Personally I would say Brando because he kind of kick-started the movement of actors being more natural and speaking less like stage actors, but I've also seen great performances that stood out from the golden age of Hollywood that some might prefer.

For a good example of the contrast, watch Giant. You have Rock Hudson turning in a very old Hollywood performance acting opposite James Dean with his Brando-inspired acting. It's a really interesting contrast that actually matches a theme of the movie in that Hudson is an old-money rancher and Dean is a new-money oil man.
