Slightly embarrassed to say I've never actually asked for one before. I've always just moved from company to company to get pay rises. But now I'm in a role I like and want to stay in but also one I don't think I'm being adequately compensated for relative to my colleagues.

This is the tricky part: I work in tech and I have a sort of hybrid, many-hats role that doesn't exactly have a direct professional equivalent in the industry. E.g. I can't say "I'm a doctor specialised in X, and competitive salaries for that role in this area are Y". I don't really know what I could compare the job to, other than in the general department of competitive companies.

What I can show is value, and the amount of responsibility I have compared to my colleagues. I can give direct wins that I've been responsible for.

So do I just call for a meeting and come prepared with a speech? Do I send a letter? How do CE.

This is a pretty good place to start. Timing is important but if you start by saying exactly this, and can support it with some kind of objective criteria you are there. Do you have any type of annual review or something like that?

YOU: "I like working here but feel that I am underpaid compared to my colleagues here and in the industry, generally. In the past I would look for another job to increase my salary but I like it here and want to stay and continue growing in this company. I believe I should be paid [amount] based on what I'm seeing offered to other people in my role. What should I expect in terms of being able to get paid more at this company?"

Be professional, don't make threats, and be realistic. Try to explain the situation with objective criteria. If you can provide examples of value you are adding to the company you should do so. You goal is to two fold -- let them know you want and deserve more money and put them on notice that you are contemplating a move to get more without making a threat. This last part will only work if you are good though. If you aren't, you may not want to discuss that you are looking elsewhere because it gives your employer an easy out for not paying you more and kind of encouraging you to go.

You have to defeat the HR rep in hand to hand combat.

But they do get to use a weapon. It's what makes it a boss fight.

This is good advice, thank you. I believe I am good and they are constantly worried I'm going to leave, so I have a good position there.

I joined the client support team in a tech company, my role was originally pretty ironed out to deal with looking after client accounts and general tech support, but then I started taking on board various higher level things since no one in the team was capable. Now I do training workshops, new feature deployment, instructional documentation and video creation, PMent and consulting. It's a mess.

Oh, want to hear how much of a sucker I was? Not long ago they just added "senior" to my job description and I didn't negotiate a payrise then. That was when I realised I need one. That and the fact that my job title is still basically the same as my colleagues but it seems like any time something is remotely hard they put it on my desk.
