Which of the following discoveries is more mind shattering?

I asked CE this recently but I decided to see what you guys think about this

1. We make first contact with intelligent beings from beyond earth and maybe learn there are many civilizations in the universe even

2. We find proof that advanced civilizations existed on earth before we previously thought. Talking like a civilization at least as advanced as our current one, but they lived thousands upon thousands of years ago or even millions. They could have been human or another species that either went extinct or left earth for unknown reasons long ago. Like we find ruins on the moon or Mars that are linked back to earth somehow. Or we find a lost city under the ice in Antarctica. Or somehow find a data disc with a video recording of life 20 thousand years ago

Most of CE voted for aliens btw

interesting. I think the reason that I want to say "aliens" is because it would actually push our knowledge outward further, so it's probably the more desirable outcome. it's also the more expected outcome.

but... depending on the specifics, the ancient civ thing could actually be more "mind shattering" if it meant that our perception of history and our scientific understand of the earth were significantly flawed. it's even difficult to imagine that happening, whereas we actually kind of *expect* to find aliens of some kind sooner or later. (not necessarily alien civ though).

We would make terrible pets tbh, I mean we rebel against our own governments all the time, no way would we be worth the headache

I think both are about the same. Both could be unique news, but people have said that both are possible so it probably wouldn't be very surprising.

Neither.
If we made first contact people would convince themselves it's a hoax. Others would be convinced that they're "demons" and need to be killed.

If we found an ancient human civilization, again, people would say it's a hoax, or it's the work of the devil, or whatever else. It would instantly invalidate most religions in the world.

Probably the advanced civilization. People widely believe in aliens and think the government is covering them up (and re-locating bigfoot when people get too close to finding him), so it wouldn't necessarily be huge of a shock although it might be a major paradigm shift particularly since humanity would likely be subjugated and/or destroyed in the centuries to come.

However, people scoff at the idea of things like Atlantis and Lemuria. The idea of an advanced ancient civilization would be of greater surprise, even if it wouldn't necessarily change life so much unless we used the stargate to move to other planets... at which point it really becomes aliens again.

So his mind would be really blown.

Well, we might need to kill them to stay safe.

Or it would be incorporated into religion or explained away by it.

a) easily

b) I could totally see being plausible. There's been mass extinction events in Earth's history and it wouldn't take anything nearly at that level to potentially wipe out a civilization. We basically had it happen already w/ the Bronze Age collapse, and the Earth just needed to give a little nudge w/ some drought/famine and climate change, maybe some volcanic eruptions and tidal surges. Not as advanced as in the OP, but it took several hundred years to get back to the same point for humanity and we still barely know about what happened.

Ancient aliens. I think people would be more interested if they found out aliens were on our planet all along.

Btw I'm reading a book now sort-of relevant to this question. Ocean of Storms by Christopher Mari and Jeremy K Brown

Its..... interesting, without giving away too much. But it involves China and the US racing to the moon to investigate an ancient object discovered buried underground that suddenly activated and caused an EMP blast on earth

I was early in the book when I made this topic but now I'm much further and it actually turned out to be very relevant to my question

I recommend it to sci fi fans
