Israel's new prime minister is sworn in, ending Netanyahu's 12-year grip on power

Naftali Bennett was sworn in as Israel's new prime minister on Sunday, after winning a confidence vote with the narrowest of margins, just 60 votes to 59. His victory ends a 12-year grip on power by former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the country's longest-serving leader.

After four elections in two years, Bennett's incoming government breaks a long political deadlock and ushers in the most diverse coalition Israel has ever seen, including the first Arab party to serve in the government. In his speech before the Knesset confidence vote, Bennett celebrated the diversity and warned of polarization within the country.

"Twice in history, we have lost our national home precisely because the leaders of the generation were not able to sit with one and another and compromise. Each was right, yet with all their being right, they burnt the house down on top of us," Bennett said. "I am proud of the ability to sit together with people with very different views from my own."

Hope for the best over there, but I am sure Hamas will just keep launching rockets and eventually the hardliners will take power with a vengeance again.

He'll be back sadly.

Also I think people are scared to talk about Israel. Anything negative is twisted into anti-semitism.

Don't me wrong, Netanyahu is bad business and this guy sounds like a step up. (I pray that he is.) But I think if Israel had a prime minister who initiated peace talks, opened up borders, and punished Israeli soldiers and police who had done wrong, people would still seek out reasons to say that Israel as a country should not exist.

I think the media silence on the change of power is proof of that.

Well, to further complicate things, the new coalition government includes an islamist Arab political party. It's kind of tough to argue that they're an apartheid ethnostate when the current ruling government literally includes Arab muslims who have been elected to government.

no better party to include in your coalition to demonstrate a commitment to genuine, honest dealmaking really

fatah is in power in the west bank and deals can be made with them

anything in gaza would inevitably be unilateral wrt hamas, but if it's part of a deal with fatah, potentially they can recover power in gaza as well.

Oh, and on this:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-57464794
Representatives of the Palestinians have reacted dismissively to Israel's new government.

"This is an internal Israeli affair. Our position has always been clear, what we want is a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital," a spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said.

"It is an occupation and a colonial entity, which we should resist by force to get our rights back," said a spokesman for Hamas, the Islamist militant group that controls Gaza.

basically expected response from fatah/hamas, but abbas has negotiated in good faith before and i believe he will again

no reason for him to compromise before negotiations begin, though
