People voting in leaders is obviously a failed solution because of how easy it is to game, but I think democracy in general has worked so well because of how it have manages to split responsibilities so well.

Long lasting democracies tend to decentralize power in such a way that those that are actually powerful (the rich) have to compete amongst themselves to buy the available resources (politicians), too much for any one entity to get full control of the system, and that tends to make it more resilient in the long run.

It's no secret that politicians are bought and paid for, but you can't sit here and say every single one is bought and paid for by the same entity. Even if they are colluding in a loose sense, their direct needs often cancel each other out - for example the Medical industry would love for everyone to be chronically sick and reliant on them to stay alive, but other industries need able bodies to work for them. Extrapolate this across all industries that participate in the real democracy of purchasing politicians and in the end you can't screw us commoners up too much without one industry fighting back to stop it.

In a less decentralized system, the highest bidder could amass too much power and ruin things for everybody. In that way, decentralization is the key to a long lasting society. And in that way, Democracy has yielded the best methods to decentralize a society and still have it function.
