Changed my mind lol. Watched the trailer and checked out the OP. Maybe I'll give 1 episode a shot. Nothing really wowed me from what I saw. Originally I was interested in just the fact that it's an anime set outside of Japan, but even then that doesn't seem like the setting is being emphasized all that much from the trailer.

I watched it all last night. Really really liked it although the end fell short for me. Still a satisfying show though and I recommend a watch.

I watched it Bossing.
It's only 3 hours total, 6 episodes. So easy watch.
I really liked it tbh. I'm not the biggest Anime fan, I like cartoons in general though.

I don't know the comic books for Trese but to me all the characters and performances were fine. The main character is meant to be world weary and serious, so she acts world weary and serious. But some don't like that I guess.

My biggest issue with it, is the lack of episodes. Considering there's only 6, they had to cram a lot in. Needs more to expand on the world's the characters and the lore. These 6 don't even begin to scratch the surface.

Can someone explain what the word anime means in English these days? People say stuff not made in Japan like this or Castlevania are anime, but other shows are animation or cartoons. What makes it anime, is it related to artstyle?

I think it's basically to describe artstyle and content. If it looks kind of Japanese inspired and is adult themed, violent and gory. Etc

It's all about artstyle--when I was in China, there was Chinese anime, same in Thailand and Taiwan. Also, like ten years ago, I worked on a French manga, so the terminology doesn't just apply to animation but comics as well.

Alright, it's like JRPG then where it doesn't really mean country of origin to most people, but a style. In Japanese all animation is anime and all RPGs are RPGs. I find the Chinese anime part strange, it's for everything isn't it?

From my experience in mainland China, Dongman was a general term for comics and anime from everywhere, not any country in particular. But then there was some other words that were used specifically in relation to Japanese "style." It sometimes became an issue because a lot people think that Japan ripped off Chinese art during the occupation (and obviously were inspired by it earlier) and got popular for it--like the word that's now often referred more often to Japanese comics is Manhua, but it used to mean primarily Chinese comics (or at least that's my understanding) and the word Manga supposedly comes from Manhua.

Wiktionary says Manga (same characters, but pronounced manhua in Chinese) is a Japanese word loaned into Chinese (about 20% of Chinese words are of Japanese origin, though more Japanese words are of Chinese origin). Chinese nationalists are kind of out of their minds when it comes to anything in Japan or Korea. Everything is from China, and if it isn't those places actually used to be part of China so it's still from China.

That's funny, when I check Wiki it says just the opposite: Etymology:
The word manhua (lit. transl. 'impromptu sketches') was originally an 18th-century term used in Chinese literati painting. It became popular in Japan as manga in the late 18th century.

Either way, I hear what you're saying. I'm part Asian but not Chinese, but most of the mainlanders were like "you're totally Chinese...everything east Asian is really just Chinese..."

Also one of my wife's cousins is the absolute worst with this shit. Every time we are in China he has to tell you how every single thing ever is from China. Did you know tea is from China? Japanese tea isn't as good because it's from China. Did you know cherry blossoms are from China? Japanese cherry blossom aren't as good... And so on.

Worth noting tea, cherry blossoms, etc. aren't genetically identical between the two, so the origin isn't as relevant in modern times.

I recommend telling people that peppers are from America so Sichuan food is actually from America (and I guess so is Italian food with tomatoes, Thai food, a lot of stuff...).

Interesting. Yeah, different sources but coming from around the same time period. It's probably one of those things where it's difficult to find the "true" first use as it is with a lot of words. In many cases, words originate in more than one place as well.

As a Filipino who doesnt speak the language, I watched it in Filipino with English subs. I liked it. Gonna watch it again in English.
