no.

I don't want something like that to potentially be held against me during background checks for any future jobs.

Unemployment does NOT work that way, I do not recommend your path.

You have to basically prove that youre applying to anything and everything, including fast food and other minimum wage jobs. Basically, its almost impossible to get on and stay on unemployment. You cant keep telling them, I refuse to work for less than $20/hr.

Maintaining unemployment checks is essentially a full time job which is probably just as stressful as whichever hob youre trying to quit.

If you get fired for not following the rules or not doing your job the company can deny unemployment and fight it with an easy victory.

Used to be you just called around and asked if places are hiring. If they said no you apply there and game the system that way. But in the current climate not too many people are saying no lol.

From someone who got fired before, don't do it. It makes no sense to intentionally sabotage your professional career. Especially just to get uneployment checks. Being unemployed after getting fired sucks. Not just mentally.. but

It trickles when you need references, and you will have to explain to future employers why you left, especially when it comes to background checks.

If you hate your job so much, then just leave. But while it's under your control, best thing to do is to be on good terms with everyone AND line up another job, and that's before you put your two weeks notice. And help them out as much as possible in your last two weeks or whatever notice you give them. Do those four things at least. Seriously think about the long run and how your reputation is worth more than unemployment checks. You never know if you could have old coworkers in new jobs too.

Also, do your best to be honest about what you put on your resume. Don't put things down you can't explain. Even though I've been honest, sometimes I've had hiccups with training and I've seriously had my boss question my skill set on my resume to my face. Most wouldn't say that to you, but you never know what kind of boss you will have.

I dont know how it is in your state, but during the pandemic you didn't have to prove you were looking for work, by far the biggest stipulation to receiving unemployment.

In my state and lots of others you now have to search for work again and like an above poster said you can't really refuse jobs you don't wanna do.

I'd quit and just wait the nine weeks here in Ireland
Anyway I'm still trying to get fired
so far it's not possible without actually breaking the law.

no, but the quality of my work for the past 2 years has been so low, that I'm surprised they haven't gotten rid of me.

In Ireland you literally just need to fill out a form that has sections for: place applied to, address of place, was there a job offered, where you accepted/where you not accepted

it's pretty basic
we have literal families on it for 3+ generations

My boss told me last week that theyre going to fire me by the end of the month if I dont improve the quality of my work and today I messed up so badly that Im 100% percent going to be fired. I deserve it, honestly. Even though I didnt do it on purpose, I do feel relieved that I wont be working here anymore

I wouldnt purposely do it, but at this point Im really just going through the motions at work. I dont really care if they let me go at some point, but it would be nice to get a sweet severance package along with the boot.

holy crap. Sorry to hear that. Well you never know if that's the last straw. when you feel that paranoid l, everything feels intensified. I feel you.

I'm also surprised they told you this, because management is usually never frank about this. I mean there's usually signs like coworkers and your boss getting pissed off at you.

one time a coworker was nice enough to say I was being watched. Glad I got fired from that job. though. That job sucked.

but I can't afford to be let go in my field.

I'm really shocked at the replies here. People really don't give a fuck here. I guess if it's low entry I could understand.. but man be careful guys when you move up into specialized jobs or positions with more responsibility.
Just don't ever try to get fired on purpose. it's not worth unemployment checks. leave yourself but make sure you have some kind of plan. No matter how much you get from unemployment, not having a job can be soul crushing, and you shouldn't be relying on it long term. You don't want long gaps especially

It varies state to state but it's very easy to just say you applied somewhere and never do it in most places. Or throw out some applications online that you're not qualified for. Lots of states waved this need during the past year but are bringing it back now.

Also, while it's very easy for a company to dispute your claim, it's hard for them to actually win. Just claim you didn't have sufficient training and make sure that you keep up with anything they tell you that you need to do on your end. The system is setup more in employee favor but lots of people just give up on fighting it.

With that said, the whole idea is honestly pretty dumb.

5-10 years ago I would have been saying the same thing, but the last 1-2 years in the corporate grind have been quite soul crushing, so Im just bitter and jaded.

Try to do what makes you happy, I guess is all I can say now.
