It's a great movie. Also as a teacher now, I get vicarious anxiety watching the scene where the principal comes to observe the class and he has nothing prepared.

Great movie.

sad fact, the drummer died just a few weeks ago or so. Crazy accident. I think this was his only movie and only got it because he actually knew how to drum. Was part of some bands, ran into Jack black a few years ago and Jack black was wearing the kids bands shirt.

The whole "turn to the camera and narrate to the audience" thing reminds me of another irreverent late 90's music movie - Human Traffic starring John Simm and Shaun Parkes. That one's about club/rave culture in London though, not like The Record Store Experience in middle America or whatever.

I didnt at the time but I can see the resemblance.

Similar but more embarrassing confession: When Holes (2003) came out & I didnt know what blackface was yet I thought they got Deweys actor to play Zero & used makeup + a wig to make him look black...

What I didn't realize for years is that it is Richard Linklater film, which in retrospect makes so much sense. (Dazed and Confused, Scanner Darkly, Boyhood, Slacker,Before trilogy, several others).

Also Black is clearly depicting the same rocker characterization that we see in his Tenacious D stuff (basically just a crude slacker rocker version of his real self). But what's neat about School of Rock is that character actually evolves.

there are good things about it. there definitely are people who do... some of the things that he does.

one big thing that stood out to me is how terrible the music is when he's playing his gig at the jazz club. it's bad enough that it actually interferes with his character: he goes on this tirade about "starbucks jazz", but the music he plays is literally a caricature of that. it's not something that you would hear at a jazz club in new york

I would have to rewatch both movies to make a more detailed comparison of the characters though
