Private equity has a place at the table, and so do Oprah and Jay-Z. Food giants like Nestl are scrambling to get a foot in the door. There are implications for the climate. There are even geopolitical rumblings.

The unlikely focus of this excitement is Oatly, producer of a milk substitute made from oats that can be poured on cereal or foamed for a cappuccino. Oatly, a Swedish company, will sell shares to the public for the first time this week in an offering that could value it at $10 billion and exemplify the changes in consumer preferences that are reshaping the food business.

Its no longer enough for food to taste good and be healthy. More people want to make sure that their ketchup, cookies or mac and cheese are not helping to melt the polar ice caps. Food production is a leading contributor to climate change, especially when animals are involved. (Cows belch methane, a potent greenhouse gas.) Milk substitutes made from soybeans, cashews, almonds, hazelnuts, hemp, rice and oats have proliferated in response to soaring demand.

We have a bold vision for a food system thats better for people and the planet, Oatly declared in its prospectus for the offering. The companys shares are expected to start trading in New York on May 20.

My favorite is probably coconut milk. I like everything coconut.

Oat milk is so nice and creamy.

A lot of people I know aren't vegan and don't drink animal milk. I live in Japan and soy milk is extremely popular but veganism is pretty rare.

i tried switching but it's just not the same. when i crave milk, i want milk. everything else tastes so vastly different, there's no way they're a "replacement" in any sense for me.

I like almond milk. Not a fan of soy milk. Haven't tried any of the other plant-based milks, but I've heard good things about oat milk.

Soy and almond are the best IMO

I stopped drinking regular milk as a beverage years ago, only using it for cereal. Then I went vegan about a year ago and switched to almond milk. Now I'm starting to switch to oat milk because it's better for the environment.

You might be happy to learn they have been working on ways to make real dairy products without the cow by fermenting dairy proteins. There are several companies working on it like Perfect Day and Remilk. And it's not far away. Perfect Day's dairy proteins are already being used in several brands of ice cream.

Almond milk isn't good for the planet and there's a lot of issues with almond farming tbh.

Also they're all gross but almond milk is good in coffee. But coffee is best black anyways so.

Have you tried any of the oatmilk coffee creamers? I was thinking about getting some of the caramel flavored one. I accidentally got some sugar free coffee mate recently and it's disgusting.

Also, protip: Natural Bliss Almond Milk Caramel is fantastic. Haven't been able to find that exact brand in a while though, so I've made do with Silk's version of it, but it's not nearly as good.

cow milk is yummy, though.

Cashew milk and almond milk are good.

Be careful with some of these though cause some of them laced with sugar, just buy the unsweetened varieties.

Big fan of Soy and Oat milk. Usually almond is the introductory alternative milk which is unfortunate because apart from being terrible for the environment it also has the closest consistency to water.

At my Aldi the almond milk is only $0.01 an oz more than whole milk. Oat still has a ways to go. Of course, you can also make your own oat milk, which is really cheap.

Idk about that, but my wife switched to Almond Milk briefly for health reasons, and it made her nauseous. Like, all day every day she drank it, not just right after. She eats Almonds without issue though.

Vanilla almond milk is amazing though. I tried Vanilla oat milk and it literally tastes like shitty almond milk. And its more expensive.
