My cynicism-instinct is telling me this more austerity than racism, but still plenty of racism.

Wish I could go back in time and shoot Columbus between the fucking eyes, none of this would happen then

There was also this:

https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/28/world/children-remains-discovered-canada-kamloops-school/index.html

Canada is way worse than the US is for treatment of indigenous people in the 20th century onwards.

Eh, it was historical inevitability that the Old World would discover the Americas, with the attendant and inevitable apocalyptic pandemics it would unleash upon the Native American peoples.
But you should still shoot Columbus, dude was a monster.

The vikings had already done that anyway.

I don't know how much the Vikings really count much. They went there for a winter or two, realized the Maritimes suck, and left, never to return until Columbus decided to tell everyone.

The committee says it is aware of a case of forced sterilization as recent as in 2019.

wtf Canada, we were supposed to be finished with this bull**** SO LONG AGO

Those records didnt just disappear from history

Also another explorer wouldve just found it if it wasnt Columbus. Hes not some mythical being, he was just an explorer who sailed directly west

Yeah but Columbus was the guy who found it - in regards to the rest of the world learning that it also existed. The Vikings getting there first didn't really matter because as far as anyone was aware, Columbus "discovered" it.

And yeah, someone else would've found it and basically the same stuff probably would've happened, but Columbus did. That's not to say he deserves a holiday or anything, but he does get credit for doing it.

What Im saying is that if Columbus had a heart attack or some shit before he set out on his exploration, another guy would have taken his place and found it instead

Also the world would be pretty awful regardless. Without the American revolution, Europe would probably still be largely monarchal. The French Revolution happened largely because of the American revolution, and it just dominoes from there, iirc

Fair enough, I can't disagree with either of these.

It's interesting the example they use. If a woman who is in poverty, lives far away from basic resources like running water, is uneducated about sex, had 6 kids already some of which may have been taken away to put in foster care, has drug issues and addictions, and shows no signs of getting better, then is it ethically correct for a doctor to sterilize the woman against her will? I've seen people support that argument. It's in the same ballpark (but not the same) as legislating abortions to be outlawed. I don't like it. There are a whole host of underlying issues that leads to all those problems that are often ignored.

I'm native myself. My wife works with Native populations that aren't doing well socially. She helps run programs that gets parents their children back from foster care. Many poor indigenous people lose their kids to the foster system and they get little help to get them back. It's appalling that more help isn't given.
