It's the past. The reason there's a weird corpse Gundyr at the beginning is bc the Ashen One #rekt OG Gundyr in the Untended Graves.

iirc, Gundyr was supposed to be the champion to link the Flame, but he was too late, and that's why the everything is dark.

and I guess the abyss corrupted him, and that's why he has that pus growing out of him when you fight him for the first time
