It requires a valid ID. An expired license does not count as 'valid'. By accepting an invalid ID to purchase alcohol he's committing a felony which can result in immediate dismissal, fines, and criminal prosecution. It's like if a place only accepts passports as valid if they're from one or two different countries and you come up with a passport from a third, completely different, country. Even if the cashier can see that you are old enough and have proof of it the story policy, and potentially law, says they can't accept said passport so selling it is grounds for dismissal. Sometimes a manager overrides and doesn't care. This is a bad behavior because it teaches the employee that there is no point in standing their ground when they see something shady going on (because the manager will just override it for a quick sale). But most employees will only sell to someone with an invalid ID if they are actively trying to get fired. Anyone with a degree of job loyalty will refuse the sale outright.

Just provide the temp ID. I don't get what the big deal there was and why you didn't present it in the first place.

The cop wouldnt have arrested me because California extended expired licenses because of the delays in the dmv

Edit: And, seriously, listen to yourself here. You knew the license was expired. You had to get a temp license. You CHOSE to leave it behind in the car, tried to pressure the cashier into accepting an invalid ID, and are now complaining about how unneeded the whole thing was when you could have either brought your temp I.D. in with you or simply gone 'sorry. I have a temp ID in the car. I'll BRB.' But chose to try and push the issue because it inconvenienced YOU. I can't see how this could be spun so you're the good guy in this situation.

My problem is the logistics of it. You have to be 21 to buy alcohol, here is a thing with my picture and my birthday on it issued from the state.

And he had it. He just left it in his car since people dont always remember to bring an extra sheet of paper with them everywhere they go. Most likely an accident. Also, most people might not assume that someone would turn them away with an expired license, especially when they had lasted a little longer due to the pandemic...

I had to convince a liquor store owner to sell me alcohol once. It was my birthday. My best friend was with me because she came from my home state to visit. I was buying alcohol, but they wanted to see her ID. I have to basically explain she was my DD, which is why she was with me. He FINALLY let me buy the alcohol after a short while...

I wish that the place where I worked sent more undercover people. It was so frustrating to take a stand and refuse to sell to someone who didn't have I.D. at all only to be overridden by a manager more afraid of a bad review or a failure to make a sale than anything.

I don't know if I ever secretly had anyone undercover but I'd heard other bartender's stories . Of course we had recklessly stupid bartenders that would serve underage people and never get busted though. Better safe than sorry

We had a GM that would do the same thing but he never said anything to me when I refused people. The biggest fight I had was someone bringing in an ID that was literally burned in half and hard to make out the details. They got really offended and then his friend straight up said I'll buy his drink for him. So then I had to tell him that I couldn't sell him a drink if he was getting it for his friend. All he had to do was get a drink without telling me if was for his friend. People are dumb

So I refused. He got the manager and sent his friends outside when I refused to budge and, even after I told the manager 'he's buying for his group of friends outside. Don't sell it to him.' she made the sale because 'we have to make as many sales as possible'. I almost stormed out right then and there.

If you're not going to listen to me when I refuse a sale for being illegal, what's the point of me ever saying 'no' to a customer?

if it didn't expire, then all IDs would accumulate forever, and any that needed to be disabled would have to be explicitly terminated. this way they auto-terminate.

another reason they expire and have to be renewed is because people's appearance and residence (ie: identifying information) change and need to be updated.

it's also maybe some defense against fake ids, since even fake ones have to be temporary.

Well I think the main reason they don't accept expired ID is that you could hand them off to others as invalid forms of acquiring alcohol. Now sure if the picture looks vastly different they might not allow it but this could allow 18 year olds to have an easy source of valid ID's that are expired.

Especially since some don't even bother to look close at the picture they just check the date on the license or ID.

Anyways TC sounds like a real asshole, the guy that is selling you the alcohol is just doing his job. Acting like they are only doing it just to annoy people is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard. At my local grocery store every single time I go through self checkout they check my ID and I am well beyond age 21.

The point is expired ones only multiply in numbers and cost nothing to acquire. Obviously this rule was put in for a reason, and it's not just to make people be annoyed. This is basically like someone bitching about a fire truck blocking his parking spot when it's putting out a fire since it inconveniences him.

the reason is more likely to make some extra income for the DMV/MVD

cause its not like its tough to get a fake license made from scratch rather than looking for someone that kinda looks like you, its even easier for people to get alcohol through illegitimate means considering it is everywhere

you can understand that the clerk was just doing his job while also acknowledging that its blatantly stupid that a form of ID can no longer be considered valid because of an arbitrary date when none of the personal details have changed

Eventually a place like that will run into trouble. In the long run, it's not worth a massive fine or potentially a shutdown or revoking of permits

If that was the case, then many states should update how they do licenses. Like on state has it where it takes a much longer time before you have to renew. Like 12 years in Arizona. Then you things like the ilitary where you don't even have to renew it in certain cases. My old license technically expired 2010. But because I was military. I was using it just fine until like 2017. And even then, I only renewed it because I got a CDL...

They expire too fast for that then. Most people don't significantly age in the period of time that they expire. At least if you're 25 or so.

A lot of people who have worked retail have had to deal with customers providing inaccurate, invalid, or otherwise questionable I.D. and then raised a fuss when pressed for more accurate identification. It always puts them in a frustrating spot and it doesn't help when the customer insists that the problem is the retail worker who, likely, just wants to keep the line moving, keep their job, and not commit a company policy violation or felony.

Bring your proper I.D. next time. The I.D. is what matters, not 'if you can tell how old you are'. Some states require I.D. for anyone under the age of 40 or 80 or without limit. It doesn't matter if you're clearly 'old enough', if they don't card they can lose a license, be convicted of a felony, and/or lose their job. At best they have to defer to management and it causes problems if the management and cashier aren't in agreement.

And rules like that are ridiculous. Most managers would probably sell an 80!year olds cigarettes since theyre definitely old enough, if were being honest. That said, Ive never heard of a store saying to card anyone who looked under 80. Ive seen the 40 one, though... Maybe it exist, though. And if it does, its still ridiculous to card anyone who looks under 80...

so ids never expire under any circumstances, and most people will have id with pictures of them when they were 18 if not younger, even into their 40s and 50s and beyond, and regardless of weight gain, medical conditions, etc? basically, the vast majority of photo ids will be decades out of date all of the time.

Depends. You would still at some point be required to change from provisionals to regular license. So, you may be over 18 by then. Also, I mean, that sort of happens already. Rev was talking about how his doesnt expire until 2049. And he wasnt the only one. At work, we have people from all over. And some had IDs that didnt expire for a long time. They already looked much different from their IDs. And would probably change more before needing to update. And some states will allow you to update without taking a mew photo. At least while in the military. Renewing one. As a matter of fact, that might been the same for TC. He said he renewed it without going up there at first, right? They may have used an old picture. And I know in the military, you can use super expired IDs as long as you have your military one, as well... But it still works as a valid license. And you could look very different. So, it might not matter much...

Well it isn't a travel ID anymore. I don't plan on going anywhere for at least 1-2 years so I can get the travel one later which expires in 10 years instead I think.
