I think it's not good to assume they're just self diagnosing. It's highly possible that they were actually diagnosed with the mental disorders by medical professionals.

I guess people look at a description of a mental illness and diagnose based on how much they relate to it. I just don't think that's a good habit to make, lol.

Also, for the people who ARE self-diagnosing, it's possible that they're doing so due to the high cost of actually seeing a doctor in the US.

As someone who suffers from depression and anxiety, I'd rather people self-diagnose and try to seek help than just assume they are okay and suffer in silence.

If you sought help you would no longer be self diagnosed

i stay up all night and sleep all day. i smoke weed habitually, and drink heavily. I watch porn every day, and i eat like shit. Work out? I don't even work, let alone work out!

BUT I AM DEPRESSED AND FUCK YOU FOR EVEN SUGGESTING I CHANGE.

Yes, it is a bit of a chicken and egg thing, in that depression leads to those behaviours....but there's fucking merit to actually trying, and enduring something that you don't like, just keep reminding yourself that this is healing. Any fucking psychologist is going to tell you the same. Be it cooking a healthy meal, going to sleep at the right time (easiest thing to fix, even if you can't fall asleep, make sure you wake up on time every day), exercising, etc.

This comes from someone who was diagnosed with a mental disorder as a young teenager. I know what I'm talking about.

Her reaction and obsession over having that categorization and/or simple explanation honestly sounds like good evidence.

The issue i see on fora is constant reassurance-seeking tbh, which isn't helpful for either depression or anxiety. support is one thing, wallowing is another.

and i say that as somoene with recurrent depression, four major episodes.

Sure, but if they didn't at least thing they knew something was wrong then they wouldn't have sought help.

I knew what I was experiencing was depression and anxiety well before going to a therapist, all they did was give an official diagnosis on my medical record.

Are some disorders less likely to be self-diagnosable? Of course.

Agreed. No, you don't know you have whatever you think you have. You may suspect it, and that's fine I suspect I have something, but you do not know.

Yes it is, and now every idiot on social media thinks they have a mental illness.

No, you liking an organized closet doesnt mean your OCD you dolt.

No you getting nervous before a big meeting doesnt mean you have crippling anxiety idiot

It makes life harder for all the people actually suffering when these motherfakers are out here talking about shit they know nothing about

Doctors are guessing half the time as well >_>

It not their fault tho. It's just that we're still all in a learning period for a lot of sicknesses, mental and physical. Obviously they're more likely to get a better read tho and if you can you should get a second opinion at the very least. I think if you're scared to talk to a professional and you got insurance to cover, it's probably cause you just don't want to be proven wrong. Unless problem causes you to fear the doctors in the first place >_>. Brains are confusing. I just see people diagnosing themselves as insight on who they are. And not in a negative way.

It's worse when someone who does have significant mental problems is treated like they don't, though.
