So the question is, when interacting with someone, no matter what, you're "manipulating" someone. So how is that "wrong"?

Well if a fictional character says so

I think that level of manipulation is pretty benign? There are a lot of speculative things that can be happening with language.

Read Lacan or something

FWIW I did quiz a Jung expert on whether projection is a feature of language or just a consequence, and he did not give me a clear answer. He also stole my ideas and and told them to the class the following week as if they were his... or just recounting my ideas for a laugh?

The use of manipulation is for good or bad
To maniuplate a child into doing chores by rewarding them is manipulation but it's not bad in society.

What if you make the kid do a lot of obtuse chores to build a work ethic, but all it does is build resent for domestic labour?

All social interaction is transactional. Manipulation may be a part of that, or it may not.

If you are trying to present yourself in a certain way, that is basically manipulation according to the prompt.

all social interaction is indeed manipulation, a lot of people just don't realize it. the difference between good and bad manipulation is intent

if you're trying to manipulate someone into doing something that benefits you and screws them over, that's bad

if you're doing something to give someone a good experience and benefit both of you, that's good

cooking dinner for your wife and giving her orgasms is manipulation...but it's done in a genuine way to show that you love and appreciate her

If you don't see benefit to the proposed transaction, you won't be manipulated.

I'd disagree with the idea that all social interaction is manipulative. A lot of it, sure.
