A 10-month-old baby has been killed after being attacked by the familys two Rottweilers while the childs father left them unattended for just a few moments to do a quick chore.
The incident occurred at approximately 8 p.m. in Willow Spring, North Carolina -- about 15 miles south of Raleigh -- when the childs father briefly left the baby unattended inside the family home to go outside and move a sprinkler in the yard, Johnston County Sheriffs Office Capt. Danny Johnson told WTVD at the scene of the incident.
The father had left the small child inside the residence unattended for only a couple of minutes, he heard a lot of commotion in the house, went back inside and found the baby unresponsive, said Johnson.
Authorities say that the father then immediately called for help and when deputies arrived they began performing CPR on the baby but were unsuccessful in their attempts.
Johnson said that emergency medical services arrived just a short time later and again attempted CPR procedures on the child but did not get a response. The baby was pronounced deceased at the scene of the attack.
The Sheriffs Office and EMS responded but were unsuccessful on reviving the child, Johnson told WTVD. It appears the familys dogs attacked the child and that is the reason for its death.
After a brief investigation, Johnson said the father, who is a law enforcement officer, had briefly left the baby unattended in the home to go outside and move a sprinkler in the yard.
He just stepped outside to move a sprinkler and the neighbour pulled up talking to him, and not even a couple of minutes passed and he heard the commotion inside the house, said Johnson.
It is not known if there have been any previous issues with the dogs before the attack occurred.
The two dogs have since been seized by animal control but it has not yet been determined what will happen to them.
Its a bad scene, said Johnson. Anytime that a young child like that passes -- or any child -- it is very hard in us all because we all have children. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. We cant imagine what they are going through. Theyve got a long road ahead of them.

I dont understand why anyone keeps animals that are capable of killing/overpowering someone.

I hope those dogs are destroyed.

Pets like that can make for good guard animals for guarding a home or business, but carnivorous, aggressive animals that could be dangerous when even slightly angered should never be trusted to be around or alone with infants and small children. I hope those dogs are put down as well. They will surely attack and kill again now that they've killed and have a taste for human blood.

Depends on the owner.
My uncle has 3 of them and they are all bunch of big cuddly babies.

Depends on the nature of the animal too. And that's something that you can't completely condition out of the animal through socialization and other types of training. If a animal gets hungry enough and something looks and smells appetizing enough and looks like it can be killed and eaten, if the predator has a opportunity, it's going to go for it.

a good owner is going to know their animal well enough to know if its safe around babies. obviously this guy either didn't know or didn't care.

That isn't 100% foolproof and you know it. Certain animals are opportunists and born killers and nothing people can try to instill in them will completely eliminate that from their nature.

Put the dogs down. Won't bring the baby back, but these dogs don't deserve to live. Moral of the story, don't have dogs when you have babies.

Dogs are still animals and their nature wants them to kill small things. Rabbits, birds, mice and yes, babies.

sure, but that's not the point. you're not going to be able to break an instinct but you sure as hell should be able to tell the temperment of the animal.

i've had several dogs and after owning them for a while i knew their temperament well enough to know how they're going to react. for example i had a basset hound who wold have let a baby annoy the hell out of him with no reaction beyond a bit of crying; this was the same dog that would routinely crack cow bone chewtoys so he knew how to be rough. in comparision i've got a whippet now who's a complete coward around new people and wouldn't bite a person out of anger; and i'd never leave him around a baby unattended because i've seen the way he plays with his toys.

a good owner will know their dog, and they will introduce their dog to their baby to see how it reacts. it takes time and care, and its obvious this guy didn't do that.

I have a 2 month old and a big ass Husky with a high prey drive. Hes been fine with the her, but even so I would never leave him alone in the room with her. Sad that these things happen, but you can never trust an animal 100% around a small child, these things are completely avoidable if you just exercise even the smallest amount of caution.

I grew up with a rottweiler while I was young and it was instead hyper protective of me around anyone other than my parents. I broke my foot when I was like 4 and she'd tow me around in a wagon outside so i could play with friends still.

It's entirely about how you raise the dog, or any animal really. A lot of people just take them in as toys and quit caring once they're not small lovable puppies/kittens any more.

Hell, my current dog is a rescued Akita that was abused to all hell and back, and she's the chillest dog ever now some years later.

That said you still have to watch your damn kids around animals, especially infants and the like. Kids like to grab and pull and gnaw on shit and that can cause trouble even with the nicest of animals. Friend of mines kid almost lost an eye when he was a little toddler because he squeezed a cats tail.

TLDR: Parent's an idiot, and just one of many parents who just want to not watch their kids nowadays. If you can make a conversation with a neighbor more important in your head than watching your kid, you got issues.

I still don't understand why people feel the need to gamble and get dog breeds that have the ability to easily maim or kill people as house pets, especially with children around.

So many more docile and less capable breeds out there to choose from.

My guess is the kid was laying / playing somewhere. The dogs started to sniff the baby. The baby found it ticklish and started grabbing at one of the dogs. The dog then went into protect itself mode because it didn't like having something on it being pulled.

If dad was in the house, he could've stopped it before the dog(s) went awol.

They are the only guard breed I would feel comfortable having around kids, but not a baby come on man. Christ these dogs have heads hard as diamond, forget biting the baby, you could have one sniffing a baby, hear a noise and suddenly snap their head back to look and kill them with a blow
