It's such a chore to play

Still looks and sounds great though

Edit: as for playing with friends, that just makes it more of a chore

Games great and insanely easy. The beginning of the snes version is the only part that could be considered hard due to lack of magic. The remakes a joke difficulty wise.

The game will always hold a special place in my heart for being the first Action-RPG I ever played, and bridged the gap between Link to the Past and Final Fantasy 6. And the soundtrack and charm of the world / art design still hold up imo. But yeah, the gameplay was bad even back then, I just accepted it because I loved the game otherwise.

The one thing the gameplay did that I loved / appreciated even as a kid was that it let you touch enemies (and even shove them around) without taking damage; they had to actively attack you to hurt you.

It was my first RPG-ish game I played, and I have very fond memories of it. But I've gone back and played it 3 or 4 times, and it's worse each time. There's this weird cutoff point where the nostalgia ends and the problems become more apparent to me.

It's still not terrible, but it's a frustrating mess at times.

I remember having fun with it playing with my cousin back in the Snes days, but I went back years ago and never got very far just because it wasn't that great. Things have come a long way since then.

Legend of Mana is where it's at. It's still beautiful, fun, and a blast to play with friends. Still too easy, though.

It's an awesome multi-player game. No other multi-player game like it when it came out. Magic Knight Rayearth on Saturn is the only similar non-franchise game I can think of.

I did not know that! Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully they make the game a lot harder and the process of making great weapons significantly less obtuse.

It would have been better had they not canceled the nintendo Play Station. You can tell that there was a lot of game play removed to deal with the capacity of a cart vs. a CD

Near the end of the trailer you can see the updates. Since I own a couple PS1 copies of the game. I won't be picking it up. And I personally enjoy the older sprite look. Adds a charm to it. Adding more pixels just hides all the work the OG team did.
However I am very excited that this is finally being released again. And hopefully many people can learn what a unique game it is.

i guess i'm an outlier in that i didn't really care for Legend of Mana all that much. i thought the do-it-yourself worldmap was kinda lame and gimmicky, and i didn't like the party limit of only 1 follower at a time.
Its easy to play the game wrong, tbh. You also get a pet companion. Still three at a time.

@ScarfForLife

Yep, just beat this game this weekend and disliked about 75% of it.

It's glitchy and unplayable at times. I got stuck multiple times just in walls or in sections I couldn't get out of and even if I switched to that character they couldn't move, so I had to reset.

The constant falling behind of characters and getting stuck behind stuff to where I have to double back is infuriatingly frustrating.

The map is really convoluted trying to fly on Flammie. I had to google "Secret of Mana map" because of how difficult it is to see where you're going on their version of the "map".

Then, because I was so fed up with the game, I stopped grinding and wanted to just finish and got to the end guy only to discover I couldn't beat him without my sword being level 8. It was 7. So I had to reset and grind because I was determined to beat it.

All in all, not an enjoyable experience/game. There are soooooo many better SNES games. I will never play this game again. And it's made me wary to play Trials of Mana which I got with the collection.

People like Legend of Mana, huh? I got that for my birthday in one of my teenage years, played it for a bit and couldn't really get into it. Pretty sure I still own it, might have to give it another chance.

You really should not be wary because Trials of Mana is a significant improvement and fixes just about every major flaw SoM has. ToM's biggest setback is that the dungeon design isn't particularly great

Thanks for the advice. I will end up playing it since I bought it. I think I may take a short breather before I go at it though.

The mid game was done a massive disservice. There was a large chunk (if you played through, you'll know exactly which palace and surrounding game play) of the story that was effectively killed off due to development history.

When Sony and Nintendo had the partnership to do the disc add-on to the SNES (that add-on eventually becoming the PS1) SoM was intended to be a launch title for it to show case what the expanded storage discs bought could do for the length of story telling. When that deal fell through, it was decided that SoM would still be released but on the SNES. That meant that a lot had to get cut out and dumbed down in order to fit the size that an SNES cart could hold. It was to the point where a palace dungeon was effectively cut down to just a story checkpoint to hold you back from progressing.

I was hoping the remastered version that came out would have rectify that and reinstate the story line as it was meant to be told as we now have blu-ray and PC storage to comfortably do that now but they didn't do that. If anything this was the thing that disappointed me more than anything regarding the game.

One of those things that could have been if they decided to release it on the PS1 instead which would've allowed for the true expanded story.
