I'm going to sleep man, I hope everyone ITT eats and feeds their loved ones a pound of butter and a liter of Coke every day going forward. I mean, there's nothing to lose. There's no any conclusive evidence that obesity is linked to heart disease or whatever and since the there's no causal link between obesity and health complications, everything should be fine
Hell I'm pretty sure no scientist has ever written a paper correlating drinking concentrated sulphuric acid with death. And since we're ignoring common sense today that should be fine too
Can't believe I have to say this but don't actually do that

Well, I don't run everyday. I usually go 6 miles at an 8:30/mile pace, which is better than like 95%+ of the population, especially considering I am 44. My point is that my BMI of 24.5 is borderline high and that is ridiculous

you yourself admit that you do more exercise than 95%+ of people, there are definitely people for whom BMI is flawed/wrong, but if you generally said it is healthier to have a BMI in the healthy weight range, that would also be true for the overwhelming majority of people.

eating a pound of butter and drinking a liter of coke every day is unhealthy. that's unambiguous. but it's also independent of people becoming fat by doing it

I have no idea what you just said. My only point is that I am very fit and barely not overweight. BMI is off for me and others too.

how is it off though given that you're fit and not overweight? if you are within the normal range you're good, doesn't matter if it's 19.5 or 24.5, it's all roughly the same when it comes to health risks depending on some other factors of course

Most people hear 200 pound woman and instantly assume shes hideous.

So I would suddenly not be if I gained 5 lbs? No. BMI is flawed. But America does have an obesity problem. Not denying that at all. People can get in better shape, as I work my ass off to be where I am. But it is worth it.

Lmao. CE's standards for weight are outrageous as always. 170 pounds would be considered an unhealthy weight, but it's not big at all. Examples:

5'4, 170 pounds

5'3, 170 pounds

Yeah, those women are totally breaking pelvises lmao.

Dude, those women are fat. Doesnt make them not fat, just because weve seen a lot bigger. Its Ok, though. Its their life and right to be whatever.

I mean I'm not sure what you mean by flawed, it's sort of a guideline, of course it's not perfect, it's just stats, basically the more you deviate from the equilibrium(which is the normal range) the more likely you are to have health issues, 5 pounds over might mean that you have an increased 0.001% chance of developping something, and it goes up exponentially or something

plenty of people will be fat and never have serious health issues the same way some people smoke and won't ever get lung cancer, it doesn't mean it's wrong to say that smoking is generally bad for you

(btw I just made the % up and stuff but it's really just a random example to explain)

You know, I do agree. This whole argument started because of people saying a 170 pound isn't attractive, which is very conditional on the tyoe of weight and where it sits on the body. That led into BMI and now it is all almost bordeine semantics.

that's correlation. it doesn't mean that being fat caused those health problems to begin with, and it doesn't mean that losing weight will make those health problems go away

plenty of people will be fat and never have serious health issues the same way some people smoke and won't ever get lung cancer, it doesn't mean it's wrong to say that smoking is generally bad for you
there's an actual confirmed causative link between smoking and lung cancer though

C'mon, I might argue that BMI is a poor metric, but there is an undeniable correlation between weight and health. Or I should say causation.

Can this stupid correlation is not equal to causation meme die. It's not applicable to a system like the human body. What you put in it and what you do with it and what state it's in absolutely affects what happens to it down the line. I don't know how anyone can doubt it

I mean it is true that correlation does not always equal causation. I am in market research and an essential part of my job. But yeah, in this case, there is no question.
