The original book the ending is Rambo kills himself and Stallone refused to do it saying it sent the wrong message to veterans. After lengthy arguments, they shot three alternate endings. One where he kills himself. One where the major does it for him, and the one where he lives. They then demoed the endings and the audiences *~~hated~~* ~~the endings where he died. I feel like he gets a bad reputation because of his voice, and the characters he plays typically aren't very intelligent themselves. Suicide made sense given everything he did.
