Although they received 45% of the vote in the election back in 2006, the Fatah president who was also elected was effectively couped after he pushed for legal amendments popular with the public but not Hamas. This led to a war between Fatah and Hamas, with each controlling one area of Palestine. Fatah is just as much the elected government as Hamas.
