The raticate guy is weird and creepy, ash trading butterfree is not in his nature, and James buying magikarp for the get rich scheme is odd considering he comes from money

Yeah the Ratticate is hideous. And Ash had been with that Butterfree since its start.

I remember watching that ep when it first aired, and I refused to believe Ash would let Butterfree go that easily. He didnt even seem to give a fuck. Hes just like well this is what trainers do, Butterfree. See ya!

and if I remember correctly, it was a two parter, and at that early time in the anime it rarely had multi part episodes. the whole experience was off putting. And it all pointless because Ash finally does let Butterfree go a few episodes later anyway. And that episode was much better than the st Anne one

It's been like two decades since I've seen the episode, but wasn't that the whole plot? That the guy basically peer pressured him into the trade and then fucked right off and then Ash regretted it pretty much instantly.

Although IIRC Ash was giving away his "friends" left and right in that show anyway

I hadn't seen the episode in ages so I have just watched it again.

Ash seemed pretty unsure about the trade from the start but Brock was in a world of his own at the time since there was a pretty girl there so when Ash turned to Brock for advice, Ash took Brock's "yeah..." as the go ahead. One instant regret later and here we are.

James did run away from home so he was probably also assuming he wasn't entitled to any money. Also no one knows James comes from a well off family until much later in the series.

but james doesn't have access to his family money.

ash got talked into it because the guy told him that's what trainers do. then he ends up getting rid of butterfree anyway...

Trading is one of the things in the games that doesn't work well in the anime. Same as Chameleon/Charizard becoming disobedient.

Yeah, looking back on it makes you realize how weird the world of Pokmon is.
Old dudes peer pressuring kids to do things they don't want is not a good look.

Considering he was basically strong-armed into it, it's understandable. But in general the whole thing was uncomfortable between the coercion, Ash's personal ties to his Pokemon (which also made transferring them to Oak awkward), and the fact he immediately regretted it. As for the why was he strongarmed into doing it, keep in mind he's ten. This is a (albeit fictional) example of why laws restrict adults from making deals with minors.

And it all pointless because Ash finally does

Which is what really made the thing annoying.

While they can't just trade with total strangers, it can work when the trainers and Pokemon know each other. Trading Pokemon would also feel less crappy than just sending them to Oak.

Registering the Pokeballs probably, because if they went to deposit them at a Pokecenter they'd have to go to the right place.

Registration details probably need to be updated so you can't steal someone's Pokemon.

why are the orange island episodes not canon? Sure they aren't a place that exist in the games, but ash and co go to many places not in the games
