Do you have a problem with getting yourself weighed at an airport before boarding?

Passengers at American Airports could soon be WEIGHED before being boarded onto their flights because there are too many FAT people in the country and the FAA is concened that aircrafts may be overloaded with heifers and hippos!!

They are being tasked with calculating the weight and balance of their aircraft to ensure its within allowable limits for safety of the plane

Increasing obesity rates in the US dictate that the standard numbers used by the airline industry to average out passenger weight is likely outdated and therefore unsafe to use

Weighing select passengers would establish a more accurate number for average passenger weight so the number of seats available on flights can be adjusted

The FAA sent out a circular 2 years ago addressing weight issues..

Monitoring weight and balance is nothing new but estimated weight for passengers that has been in use is no longer viable given how heavy americans are getting with 42% of the country now turning into walruses

To get a better sense of weights, a random survey sampling may be implemented including passengers being weighed at gates.

It would be voluntary and people may have an option to opt out

Old FAA standards list the average american adult passenger and their carry on to be 170lbs in the summer and 170lbs in the winter which accounts for extra clothing

New standards increased to 190 and 195lbs

179-184 for women and 200-205 for men

It is a 12% increase in estimated weight but still, airlines need to do their own surveys every 3 years to see how heavy the american travelling adult is getting

It's not clear if a passenger will be penalized but the airline will then have to move on to a different random passenger to participate

The FAA does address privacy concerns stating the data will remain confidential and any weighing would be public view

The scale readout should remain hidden however and the weight data collected remains confidential

184 sounds heavier for a woman than 205 sounds for a man. Oo

Depends on the presentation. If there's a ring announcer and they let me flex as they announce my height and weight, I'm cool with it.

I feel like the airlines don't actually need to weigh people before getting on the plane. Like if they need data on the average weight, why not just contact medical providers? While they can't share personal data, they can share aggregated data of groups with no personal information attached. Would probably be more accurate as well, since you could get a larger sample size.

Ether way, there is no way every airline picks this up, and will likely push customers away from those who do.

This. Their criteria seems to be totally out of whack.

Googled, and supposedly the avg. weight for a U.S. woman is 170.6 lbs and the avg. weight for a U.S. man is 197.6 lbs.

But it's sexist against men, so it'll be allowed w/o challenge.

Their rules are dumb to begin with. Your luggage cant be overweight, but you can wear everything you own and not pay more.

Their weight limit for women is 13.4 lbs over the avg. weight for women, or +7.85% above the avg.

Their weight limit for men is 7.4 lbs over the avg. weight for men, or +3.74% above the avg.

Does math offend you?

Look, I'm not going to deny that men and AMAB people get the short end of the stick on certain social issues. Especially in cases like child custody. I'm not saying prejudice against men doesn't exist.

I'm just saying saying a couple percentages difference on a scale isn't making the argument for Men's rights you think it is. Especially, when "ewww" is used in regards to the women's weight, and

ESPECIALLY when those minor percentage differences are in an inflammatory topic on Gfaqs that has no source.
