People in general are too obsessed with gyms and gym equipment imo. You can stay perfectly fit using just your own body weight as equipment.

I'd say it's the stop/start motion that people don't like. In a treadmill, you can just zone out while running at a constant speed. Same goes for outdoor runs. To pace you have to run a few feet, stop, turn around, run back, then rinse repeat. It's more involved mentally.
Though it's more popular in athletic conditioning, as it adheres to HIIT concepts much better than steady-pace running does. You also get tired more quickly if you do it in bursts so you can burn more calories in a slower amount of time. Plus, the expectation is that back-and-forth pacing is meant for sprints, not light jogs. I guess it's really more of a jog vs. sprint preference than it is a treadmill vs. pacing back and forth preference. --- Congratulations! Your post was deemed response-worthy. ...
