I'm about to go on holiday for a week. What are your patented vacation tips that are key to having a good time?

Go to the places where the locals are

Wear a baseball cap at all times

Don't be afraid to walk a bit instead of getting transport all the way to your destination

Don't plan everything, but be sure to have something planned

Eat a currywurst

fwiw all of my holidays have been pretty loose, I just walk around and do what I want. Gives me a level of control I don't usually get around other people, which is like 95% of my life. I'm gonna get some mall sushi and a peri peri chicken pie from 7-11 as soon as I get there, shit's gonna be sick - otherwise I have no concrete plans.

For sure. I packed 4 of everything, as well as 3 Hawaiian shirts. Probably won't even wear the Hawaiian shirts if it's too cold, and this place has a reputation for getting chilly. But hey, it all fit in the bag, so off I go.

I'm thinking of hitting up the local bars, I put a post up on Reddit asking where the cheaper drinks are. The most promising place is a bar above a Chinese restaurant, so that's a beer and a feed.

I'm planning to take the bus or something to get to other suburbs, but other than that I'm on foot. Part of the fun is getting around on foot and just enjoying myself in an unfamiliar environment.

Currywurst sounds good, but idk if I'll seek it out.

That's a good plan. The place I'm staying at had mixed reviews regarding mildew and stuff, but mostly from 2-3 years ago. Now the main complaint is people being noisy in the common area, and for the price I'm paying for a queen bed and a private bathroom, I can live with that.

they're painfully boring unless you like day drinking and gambling. and when you make port, unless you're the first off the boat and you've planned ahead with a smaller local tour, you're going to spend the majority of the day in a herd of boat people. kind of ruins the experience.
