What... what does it mean? This Faye lady who we never see is a giant... I thought scattering her ashes would "awaken" the giants or some trope like that.

More importantly, what the hell... Loki? Atreus is Loki? I don't understand. How? For a quick beat I was worried that Atreus would do that Loki illusion thing and transform into a fully grown man who's tricked Kratos this entire time but thankfully that didn't happen.

What could this mean for the series... isn't Loki a villain? I don't... they foreshadowed a lot of this father-son and parent-child conflict, especially with Freya-Baldur, but to think they meant this... does this mean this is finally when Kratos dies, by letting his trickster son kill him to save him? I just don't know...

If you're thinking of marvel, they took a lot of liberties with and changed the norse mythology to suit their needs, this is a lot closer than that.

Faye is short for Laufey, who is the mother of Loki. They're both frost giants. Marvel made Laufey the dad.

In the god of war world, Laufey happened to meet Kratos rather than whatever other giant she shacked up with in the mythos.

Depends on what iteration of norse mythology you're looking at. Remember, in this iteration Thor and Odin and co are colossal assholes.

Loki is just the god of mischief. But I guess from the ending we can expect that he and kratos are gonna have a fall out, or fight, and kratos is gonna die again.

im guessing the next game is going to

Start off with Kratos and boy just kind of chilling.

One day, on a hunt Arteus runs off to chase a wounded deer. Que Kratos chasing after him through the super thick forest, all the while screaming "Boy!". Finally reach a clearing where you see Arteus kinda staring at the sky. *BOOM!* big lightning crash and OMG its Thor!

Big Boss battle that you cant win. Thor kidnaps Boy and Kratos passes out.

*Time skip!*

Kratos has spent the last 20 years trying to track his son down and get revenge on Thor.

Plow through tons of nordic fodder. Kill a few lower gods. Finally reach Thor aaaaaand

The new (and brainwashed) Loki fights you while Thor looks on. The entire fight is basically exposition and Kratos holding back to not kill Loki.

You snap him out of it. All looks well. Thor swoops in and mushroom slaps Loki with a hammer, putting him on deaths door.

Big battle with Thor. You win and go to deliver the killing blow. Loki distracts you by pleading you not to do it. Thor hits Kratos with a super attack and escapes (maybe knows his eye out or leaves a permanent scar)

More dialogue and exposition to set up the 3rd game.

Fin

tbf, I don't think that Atreus being Loki necessarily means that he'll be a bad guy/villain.

I say that because the God of War franchise has taken traditionally loved gods and turned them into shitty characters.

Baldur, for example, is supposed to be the most loved god, iirc, and GoW2018 turned him into some bitter monster.

In Norse mythos, the origin of Loki remains unknown. He just kinda showed up one day and Odin got to know him and called him his brother. They leaned hard into that with this; hes part Greek God and no ones knows how the hell that could happen. I liked it a lot but that's probably due in part to being a Norse Pagan.

I think you're the one who had the topic going about it? If so, I left one thing out about Baldur's mythological death: Loki was the one who threw the mistletoe. It was kind of a surprise to me too, but it shouldn't have been since I knew that myth.

I think the coolest thing about the plot twist is that it retroactively makes Baldur kind of funny. He spends the entire game thinking that Kratos is Faye. Right from the start when they meet and he tells Kratos, "I thought you'd be bigger."

In the myths, Loki's father was named Frbauti (meaning "cruel striker" or "lightning"). I believe the runes on the walls at the end of the game refer to Kratos by that name.

Also, TC, go back to Kratos' house after beating the game. There's a treat.

In Norse mythology Loki sometimes helps and sometimes hurts the gods. He becomes a full-time villain to them after killing Baldur, but in God of War Kratos is also a villain to other gods so theres no reason to expect Kratos and Loki will ever be on opposite sides.

Legit. The main point I got from the game is that the gods are putting out propaganda about how great that are when in reality they're evil sadistic bastards.

Yeah my last topic purged as I was too intently focused on doing musphelheim and niflheim. I even got all the ravens! Though there's this weird glitch where it still says "42/43 Ravens" in Midgard for some odd reason.

So wait you think Baldur/Odin thought Kratos was a giant, or that he was Faye who was a giant? Or Baldur simply mistook Kratos for Faye?

Also thanks I'm gonna go over to the house soon, I was actually suspecting I might get additional dialogue and snippets since I'm still getting them even after beating the game and returning to Tyr's temple.

That's basically the twist of the game. In the very beginning of the game when Kratos is chopping down the tree, that is what breaks the magic spell that is concealing Kratos and his family. Odin then notices it and sends Baldur to kill the giant because he wants all giants dead (I think it has to do with some prophecy). Baldur gets there and thinks the giant is Kratos, Kratos and the player believes he's being hunted because he's a God that doesn't belong there, when really Faye (Atreus' mom) was the Giant all along.

The Loki thing is interesting, I think in Norse mythology he spits out a snake or something when he is a kid and that turns into the World Serpent that we see in the game? So I think the game is going to be dealing with some time travel shenanigans in later games.

Wow I just replayed the beginning of the game in new game+ to remember what it was like and immediately noticed the hand mark on the tree, that must have been the protection! I didn't even realize it. That was a pretty clever bait and switch, even we the player were fooled as to the reason why we were being hunted.

Knowing what we know now, What does it mean that Atreus/Loki hears voices though and understands all languages? I wonder how that will fit in later...

This game really was overall amazing. Nuanced, great story, wonderful voice acting, and gorgeous to boot.

It's funny, I beat the game and while I still don't get all the nuances of combat (but definitely more than when I started) I actually prefer it to the older style. Having Atreus was definitely great, his bow and runes came in handy when I needed a breather or some leeway.

I'm so glad I gave it a chance. I had no idea just how much of an improvement and change it was from the cheesy blood and gore style/angry yelling of the originals.

Was anyone even expecting such strong writing, not to mention surprising depth from Kratos? And I love how the new voice really adds gravitas to almost every line he utters.

And the soundtrack! I really wish I recorded the bits I wanted to hear again for later. I don't know how to find them now. Basically anything with chanting or the one that was reminiscent of Gladiator's soundtrack when he daydreams about his family. Whenever Kratos is reminded of something Faye related, like the ending of the game when they scatter the ashes (in itself a very moving scene)

I'm pretty sure every bit of prophecy regarding Norse mythology is now inherently bullshit in that universe because none of it accounted for Kratos. This isn't a glitch actually, there's 1 or 2 extra ravens in Midgard that aren't tracked for whatever reason. So you still technically have 1 "actual collectible" raven still left in Midgard somewhere.

How are you doing on the valkyries by the way? Feels so satisfying to finally kill all of them lol. And have you given any thought to doing a New Game + playthrough? It feels like an entirely different game I'm telling you, it's got some fun builds that you can't do on a first playthrough.
