For me it always had. However thinking about it more.. why should it. I won't be seeing the color of the car while I am driving. In side color should matter more.

I feel the same way. It matters, but I'm not sure why.

I always get black cars. Years ago I had to get a rental after my car was rear-ended. I had a black Toyota Camry. They gave me a gold one and I felt weird. Then I got in and I was like "... ... ... ... Can't even see what color it is now"

If I'm buying used: Not really, options are what I'm looking for

As long as its not an ugly shade, I don't really care. Most of my cars have been black or silver.

Yes, I have my preference. Definitely not a fan of very bright colors on a car like orange or yellow.

I used to work as a car detailer. If you don't care about colours but you do care about maintenance, here's my "least to most fucky colours" tier list

  1. Metallic Champagne. Ugly, but you won't see rust, or scratches, OR dirt. It always looks clean. It's the best in terms of overall longevity and least amount of cleaning required.
  2. Metallic Silver. You'll see some dirt, but not any scratches. Excellent, but boring colour.
  3. Various gun metal metallics. Similar as above, but scratches more visible. Looks nicer than silver though.
  4. Metallic White/red. Both of these colours suffer from clearcoat degradation faster, in hot weather. White looks terrible almost always, but scratches are invisible at least. Red is kinda cool but we saw so many fucked clearcoats on red cars coming in. This might be worse than black, but eh.
  5. Metallic Black is pretty bad. It looks great when it's spotlessly clean, but when is that? You'll see dirt, you'll see scratches, you'll see water marks. And it's always hot inside.
  6. Flat colours. Noticing a trend above yet? Metallic is harder than flat paint. Flat paint is also much easier to see scratches on. Flat only looks good when it's clean and perfect, and unless you really know how to detail a car properly then I guarantee your paint is getting scratched further every time you wash it.
  7. Pearlescent. Fuck that shit.
  8. Matte. Don't buy a matt coloured car, unless you hate money.

Thank you a lot for the list.

I am looking to be a new Jeep. And the only one that is near me and I in my price rage is red. I hate red with a passion. But I am trying to talk myself into getting it.

Also I know you said you didn't like it, but pearlescent is just so cool. Well at least when I was younger. Just how it would change. I don't think that would look good on a jeep lol.

Or if all else fails I can plastic dip my car any color.

The main problem with pearlescent is panel repair work. Say you have a small bump and need to get a partial respray. It's hard enough to colour match a flat colour, nevermind a colour that looks like 5 different colours depending on which angle you're at!

I have a slight personal bias against them admittedly. If you like it, cool. But just understand that you'd be buying a finnicky thing to look after.

Yes, I prefer black cars. I remember a salesman who tried to convince me to get the car I wanted in white because it was all they had in stock. He said that women typically prefer white cars anyway. Needless to say I went to another dealership and got my black car.

I once witnessed a used car salesman pretend to be a devout christian in order to sell a car to a nun. They have no fucking shame.

if you're buying a car under <10k where the object is to get from point a to b, it shouldn't really matter
if you're buying a car in the 10-~25k, then you at least want to not hate it, probably avoid black since it shows dirt the easiest and if you care you'll need to wash it more often
if you're buying a car 30-40k+ you want it to be as close as to what you want as possible, which includes color.

I usually go for black or dark colored cars. white is too plain for me and a pain to keep clean. no bright colors or any shade of red... burgundy might be an exception for classic cars though. I'd deal with the pain of keeping a white car clean than own a red vehicle.
