The anime was made at the same time the manga was still on going, so theres a lot of details that are glossed over in the anime than in comparison to the manga. Like Legato (the telepathic dude), the manga explains his backstory while the anime just makes him a villain who simps for Vash's brother.

Trigun is one of those shows I watched very early in my anime watching days, I thought it was awesome back then but I only ever saw it as a 12 year old.

I want to rewatch some of the anime I saw back then, but based on what I remember of it I don't think Trigun is one of those.

It's been a while, but in summary:

1. In the manga Vash eventually confronts Knives who has been going around absorbing other plants to turn himself into a super powerful monstrosity. Some humans still in orbit get involved and there's a big final confrontation.
2. Vash and Knives eventually make peace after their final fight and Vash chooses to run away with Knives to protect him. Knives eventually uses the last of his power and dies.
3. IIRC the manga has one of those "and the goofy adventures continue" style ending with Vash going off on more adventures and Meryl chasing after him. I don't think they ever officially get together.

In the manga Meryl and Millie are rather minor characters and practically disappear after the first few volumes of Trigun Maximum, with small cameos near the end. Several of the Gunho Guns in the anime were made up and the manga counterparts have a lot more fights, and the struggle with Knives takes up a larger portion of the story and the final battle is a much larger scale than just the little handgun fight the anime did. Kinda hard to really describe it all if your only frame of reference is the anime that barely covered anything. Hence the need for a reboot anime.

It's like a lot of anime movies, just a side-adventure that takes place in a vague time frame in the middle of the series, like any of the DBZ or Bleach movies. But yes, it's worth watching.

It's hinted at throughout the series and I think stated in the manga. The scene where he talks to the girl in the plant is the first major clue.

That's why Knives and Vash live so long and are so powerful.

I think it's stated in the anime, too. I remember knowing it for sure, but not really knowing exactly what it meant beyond the fact that they were related to the power stations around the world. The details are vague but the information is all there.

I thought they outright stated that in the spaceship episodes. Or made it obvious. Could have sworn it was one of the reasons one of the crewmen had issues with the kids. Maybe not though since Neon apparently didn't catch it either.

I'm about 90% sure it's mentioned directly at some point, because I've always had a clear impression that Vash and Knives were plants, without a single doubt. It wasn't ambiguous, in my experience, but...I haven't watched the whole series in probably ten years, so I could just be misremembering.

Yeah, in the manga Knives is much closer to an ecoterrorist. He resents humanity for using his species as batteries, so he goes around destroying power plants and absorbing the "plants" inside because he can't stand to see them drained of all their life to power cities.
