The Liberal party leader somehow thought allying her party with their antithesis (the Nationalist party) would make their lost voters return.

It has not worked and the party keeps polling at 2.9% and you need 4% to hold seats in Swedens Parliament Riksdagen. The party is now utterly falling apart due to infighting related to the decision to work with the Nationalists.

It is my understanding that Liberal means something different in this context and maybe the alignment with far right groups is not surprising?

The Liberals have traditionally stood for:

* Low taxes and a small nation state but investments in welfare sectors.

* Pro-LGBTQ rights for decades.

* Generous on immigration and asylum.

The Far-Right want a strong nation state, anti-LGBTQ and anti-immigration.

Oh and the Liberal party is probably the most EU-friendly party in Sweden and make a huge deal about that all the time. The Nationalists on the other hand dream of Swexit.

Which party would be the best bet, assuming the Liberals are trending so low? Sorry Im not familiar with Swedish politics
I often vote for the Socialdemocrats. They govern together with the Green party since 2014 as a minority Government. They had a State Budget Partnership with the Far-Left 2014-2018 and then they switched out the Far-Left for the Centre Party (Neoliberals) and Liberals.

Passing your budget is one of the most important things for a Government. The Liberals are leaving that partnership after the 2022 Spring budget though. The next election is in September 2022.

What Government well get after that election is very unclear. Because the Green party and the Christian Democrats are also polling close to the 4% threshold right now. We could get a Conservative-Christian Democratic-Nationalist Government if the ChristDems stay in Riksdagen but the Greens fall out for example.
