Never played one before, but Im kinda interested in it for reasons

A lot of people are going to blindly hate. So just look out for that.

SO4 is my personal favorite of the series. For a few reasons.

The combat system is easy to pick up and works really well. You can build up the bonus board and abuse HP/SP replenish sites to take a lot of the grind out of the game.

There are a lot of unique skills for each character and each of them play differently. For the bossses, its going to require you to think before you fight. You will get rekt if you just spam attack on your main character. Switch characters often and use supporting skills to get shit done right.

There is a new game plus feature that cranks up the enemy difficulty a lot. If you want a real endurance challenge, the secret boss on the hardest difficulty can easily take 30 minutes, where you have to be on your game the entire time.

If you are into crafting and item hunting, this game also features that. Its not robust like atelier, but it gives a nice carrot on a stick to kill some time and get some really great gear.

Side quests are pretty easy. Most of them are fetch quests that you can complete as soon as you get them. Others are more engaging and worth going after.

If you like waifus and fanservice, this is the SO for you. For a T rated game, you can see a lot of skin that even some M rated games wont show.

There is a lot more if you want specifics, but thats the general lot you would be getting. There are some downsides though that people who actually played the game dont like. Things like...

The number 1 complaint is the "annoying voice acting". 99% of the time they are directly referencing 1 character and their annoying verbal tic. Its silly and annoying for a bit, but its not that big of a deal. You get an explanation why they look and act the way they do later on in the game, so it kinda adds to their character.

The grind is real. This isnt the kind of game you can just pick up for 10 minutes and get a lot of shit done. You need to put some focus into it if you want to max things out and make things easier on yourself. Like i said earlier, they have easy ways to grind a lot out but even then it is a turnoff for some. If you are a trophy hunter, youre looking at 2-300 hours to get the plat unless you super optimize everything.

For some of the side stuff, the game is not really clear (mostly the private actions and where to hunt rare items). Consult a guide if you really care about which ending you want, or if you want to 100% everything.

Overall I love the game and i play it all the time. Its got a lot of haters, but i ignored them and played or myself and am very glad i did.

Well, Star Ocean 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. Top 3. So first of all, nothing else in the series comes close for me.

With that said - I loved Star Ocean 4.

I never played Star Ocean 4 but 3 sucked balls.

As far as I'm concerned, there was a barely tolerable amount of grind in 2, which was the best game in the series. 3 & 4 had way too much grind, and that's one of the things I can't stand in an RPG.

It's much better then 5 at least. You also get to go to other planets.

There's some structure issues related to it being on multiple disks that really hampers a lot of the things that I like about the series. No SO has a good story, so tbh I wasn't that upset about it.

combat's pretty repetitive and the environments are boring
the characters are all absolutely fucking terrible and their voice acting is annoying at worst (the cat girl, sarah, lymle) or super boring at best (reimi)
it's pretty long and the quests and crafting are really boring and annoying

That game from a graphical standpoint has this really annoying lighting and coloring effect that plagued most early Xbox 360 releases and caused headaches after a few hours of playing.

The cutscenes were also numerous and loooooong. So long I actually started falling asleep during the later ones.

It takes literally everything the 3rd game has to offer and does it better. If anything TTEOT was the worst in the series.

It's ok, dropped it after 30 hours

+ Looks nice for the most part, both characters and locations. It kinda holds up tbh
+ Visitibg different planets was cool, especially Earth
+ Nice clean UI
+ I like the bonus board
+ Don't remember much of crafting but I think it was neat

- That Kay girl
- Edge Maverick
- Combat felt shallow compared to Tales
- Music exists, only like 3 notable themes
- Mostly lame characters and story

Honestly the only time Edge bothered me was when his actions lead to the destruction of Earth. Who am I kidding. That's why he's the worst.

Not even close. 5 was worse than it, and if we are going with all JRPGs you delve into games like Arc the Lad: End of Darkness and Eternal Ring, games that aren't even worth mentioning when your talking about JRPGs. Eternal Ring interestingly enough.... made by the same company that made Dark Souls. So really shows that even decent companies can have bad couple of years.

It's incredibly fun to play but the characters are trash and the plot is nothing.

Four had some decent ideas and screwed them up but at least tried while 5 was just a lazy Game with minimal effort.
